SOUTH WINDSOR PATRIOTIC COMMISSION
October21, 2013

The meeting was called to order at 7:30 p.m. by Kent Carlson, followed by the recitation of the Pledge of Allegiance.

ATTENDANCE: Peter Anthony, Herb Asplund, Gene Botteron, Kent Carlson, Billy Carroll, Teri Dickey-Gaignat, Len Glasser, Bob Hornish, Daria Plummer, Art Sladyk, James Throwe.

MINUTES:
Motion: Plummer/Hornish:  Move to accept the minutes of September 16, 2013, as printed. Carried.

TREASURER’S REPORT: Written report presented by Kent Carlson; accepted by consensus.  
O To date, budget on target; half of fireworks cost has been paid (Evening/Park).

CORRESPONDENCE: None for this meeting.
 
COMMITTEE REPORTS:

Essay Contest: (Roger Anderson):
  • Roger has asked members for ideas for the 2014 Essay Contest.
  • Has met with Mr. Frank at SWHS.
Evening In The Park: Kent Carlson (See treasurer’s report)
              
 Memorial Day Parade and Ceremony: Len Glasser  No report at this time.

Flag Day flag retirement ceremony:  Peter Anthony  No report at this time.

Veterans Day Parade:  Kent Carlson; November 3, 2013
  • TE Band confirmed; American Legion, also, to march.
  • Kent will invite town officials again to march with us.
  • Bus leaves Community Center @ 10 AM; parade @ 12:30.
  • PR has been done.
Veterans Day Ceremony:  Kent Carlson; November 11, 2013.
  • Col. Scott Panagrosso, Army National Guard, (Head of Aviation), speaker.
  • Sound system, taps, honor guard all in place.
  • Chaplain, Reverend Doug Rowse
  • PR completed.
Veterans in the Schools:  Bill Carroll, Jr. November 11,   2013
  • SWHS program starts at 7:25; guests requested to arrive at 7.
  • Billy will confirm programs for TEMS and all five elementary schools.
       
Wreaths Across America: Art Sladyk; December 14, 2013
  • Dates are: 12/8/13, Cabella’s; 12/9/13, 12 noon, State Capitol; 12/14/13, VMP, noon.
  • To date, nearly 800 wreaths sold.
  • Further information found online, Search: wreathsacrossamerica, CT, then SW.
Wall behind the Monument:  Art Sladyk
  • Brick fund can serve as seed money, if needed (up to $5000).
  • Art will contact Bob Moeller for his original list of donors for the original memorials.
  • Art meeting with Executive Director of Chamber of Commerce.
  • Art will be working on request for Community Foundation after meeting with them (Oct. 28, with Herb Asplund), as well as working on the town grant.(SW has a matching grant program up to $5000).
  • Members met to discuss possible benefit dinner at Maneeley’s, with program book listing donors at various levels; seeking bank grants; contacting Rotary, Lions, Jr. Women’s Club, Chamber, among other town organizations.
  • Granite cost is approximately $45,000; contractors still indicate donation of labor.
  • Committee still thinking on signage around town.

OLD BUSINESS:  None at this time.
            
NEW BUSINESS:
  • There will be an Octoberfest, Friday, October 25, at the Officers’ Club, Hartford; Buffet dinner 7 PM. Cost: $30.00
ANYTHING FOR THE GOOD OF THE COMMITTEE:
  • A marker will be made and installed for past member M. Terri Kyc, who recently passed away, and will be placed at VMP before Veterans Day, if possible, but definitely by Memorial Day.  

The next meeting will be held Monday, November 18, 2013, at 7:30.
