Patriotic Commission Minutes 6/17/2013
SOUTH WINDSOR PATRIOTIC COMMISSION
June 17, 2013

The meeting was called to order at 7:30 p.m. by Len Glasser, followed by the recitation of the Pledge of Allegiance.

ATTENDANCE: Roger Anderson, Peter Anthony, Gene Botteron, Len Glasser, Daria Plummer, Art Sladyk, James Throwe.

The meeting was suspended to allow Sophie Crane, first place winner, grades 3-5 (grade 4, PV), to read her essay to the Commission.  Sophie had been unable to attend the Town Council presentation on June 3.  Sophie received her certificate and gift card from Roger Anderson.  The meeting resumed after the recitation and presentation.
Motion: Throwe/Sladyk:To suspend and to resume after the presentation.  Carried.

MINUTES:
Motion: Sladyk/Anthony:  Move to accept the minutes of May 20, 2013, as printed. Carried.

TREASURER’S REPORT: Written report presented by Len Glasser.  
  • Budget remains within parameters of anticipated programs; $130.30 remains.
Motion: Throwe/Anderson:  Move to accept the report as prepared.  Carried.

CORRESPONDENCE: No report at this time.
 
COMMITTEE REPORTS:

Essay Contest: Roger Anderson: January-March 1, 2013 (event completed)
  • Gene and Daria thanked for their help with essay contest winners during the Memorial Day Parade and at the Town Council presentations.
  • All essays and pictures (one family declined photo) into the Reminder News, which will begin printing essays in July editions.
Evening In The Park: (Kent Carlson); May 18, 2013 (event completed)
              
 Memorial Day Parade and Ceremony: Len Glasser; May 27, 2013 (event completed)
o       Forty-five minute parade went well.
  • Signage for the annual parade will be researched by Art Sladyk.  .
Flag Day flag retirement ceremony:  Peter Anthony; June 15, 2013
o       New date for ceremony will be between June 19 through June 22, due to other business being held at the SWFD.
  • GS/BS may be present this year at the ceremony.
Veterans Day Parade:  (Kent Carlson); November 3, 2013
  • Application has been sent in.
Veterans Day Ceremony:  (Kent Carlson)—November 11, 2013—no report at this time.
       
Veterans in the Schools:  (Bill Carroll, Jr.) –November 8, 2013—no report at this time.
       
Wreaths Across America: Art Sladyk; December 2013
o       Donations being sought.

OLD BUSINESS:
o       Report on the proposed wall behind monument at VMP: Art Sladyk
  • Art met with a representative from Design Professionals; site work stats to be reviewed; info composite will be made.
  • Structural engineering report to go to Lloyd Folsom Construction. (Materials will be pro bono; Kevin Foley to do site work.)
  • Park/Rec have been kept abreast to date.
  • Commission anticipates making a July presentation to the Town Council
  • Fundraiser will be needed for this project that will enhance VMP and define the memorials from the pool areas.
  • Flags around the center of SW: (Billy Carroll) No report at this time.
  • WWI Anniversary: Len Glasser will begin research as to what SW can do to commemorate this event; looking for relatives of WWI veterans.
NEW BUSINESS:
  • Jim Throwe: CT State Veterans Memorial, Hartford Armory. Granite pavers: $150 through 7/4/13, then price to $250. Commission interested in having a SW paver.
ANYTHING FOR THE GOOD OF THE COMMITTEE:
  • Jim Throwe honorary co-chair with Bob Moeller for 7/26/13 Korean War Reunion sponsored by the CT Veterans’ Commission (60th anniversary). There will be a recitation of the 616 names of CT residents killed in action. Reunion to be held at Camp Niantic, 11-2. Veterans may bring a guest.  Invitations being mailed.
  • Freedom Flights to start for Korean Vets to visit the Memorial in DC.  Roger and Peter will obtain names for Jim for both the picnic and flights.
  • Connecticut Veterans Wartime Service Medal and Challenge Coins to be given at both events to qualifying veterans.
  • Possibility of a restored WWI ambulance to be in Memorial Day Parade 2014.

The next meeting will be held Monday, September 16, 2013, at 7:30.
