Patriotic Commission Minutes 4/15/2013
SOUTH WINDSOR PATRIOTIC COMMISSION
April 15, 2013


The meeting was called to order at 7:30 p.m. by Kent Carlson, followed by the recitation of the Pledge of Allegiance.

ATTENDANCE: Roger Anderson, Peter Anthony, Herb Asplund, Gene Botteron, Kent Carlson, Bob Hornish, Daria Plummer, Art Sladyk.

MINUTES:
Motion: Sladyk/Hornish. Move to accept the minutes of March 18, 2013, as printed. Carried.

TREASURER’S REPORT: Written report presented by Kent Carlson.  
o       Bounce House fee (for Evening in Park) less than anticipated; Petting Zoo costs have increased from last year.
o       Budget remains within parameters of anticipated programs.

CORRESPONDENCE: Kent Carlson
 o     Invitation received to participate in the 2013 Connecticut Veterans Parade.
 o     Eugene Policelli Service Awards, May 7, 7 PM.  Commission has been invited; if attending, please let Kent know.

COMMITTEE REPORTS:

Essay Contest: Roger Anderson: January-March 1, 2013
 o     56 entries received,  39 essays, 17 posters.; 23 grades 3-5; 11 grades 6-8; 5 grades 9-12.
  • Winners in each category are:
  • .Poster Winners (My Favorite Patriotic Holiday): 1st: Hailey Deptula, K, OH; 2nd: Rilee Harris, 2, PV; 3rd: Kami Tarantino, 1, PV.
  • Essay, Grades 3-5 (My favorite Connecticut historical person and why): 1st: Sophie Crane, 4, PV; 2nd: Pranav Ramesh, 3, ET; 3rd: Keshav Ramesh, 4, ET.
  • Essay, Grades 6-8 (What it means to me to be an American): 1st: Aaron Yao, 8; 2nd: Vivian Ngo, 7; 3rd: Victoria Pellegatto, 6. [ all TEMS]
  • Essay, Grades 9-12 (What it means to me to be an American): 1st: Tushar Gaddi, 11; 2nd: Mary-Kate Harper, 9; 3rd: Bridget Sharos, 10. [all SWHS]

Evening In The Park: Kent Carlson; May 18, 2013
       o     Jaycees will do the catering this year; proceeds will support Jaycee local charities.
       o  Face painting; petting zoo; bounce house; Community Band/Chorus.
      o  DAV, AL, VVA to be represented. Also: Food/Fuel Bank; Junior Women’s Club; K of C.
  • Fireworks contract/permit all set, as is light for exit of field.
  • There will be a military discount.
Memorial Day Parade and Ceremony and flags on graves: Kent for Len Glasser; May 27, 2013
o       Col. Adams, CTNG, will be speaker.
o       Three bricks will be placed, plus marker for Del Conroy on monument. If Del has no brick in his honor, one will be purchased for him.
o       Policy for monument markers will be reviewed/discussed at a later meeting.
  • Bob to order wreaths.
Flag Day flag retirement ceremony:  Peter Anthony; June 15, 2013
o       Flag retrieval up-to-date.

Veterans Day Parade:  Kent Carlson; November 2013
  • Invitation received.
  • Checking with TE and Police Honor Guard
Veterans Day Ceremony:  Kent Carlson—November 11, 2013—no report at this time.
       
Veterans in the Schools:  (Bill Carroll, Jr.)  
        o Friday, November 8, 2013 continues to be the expected date for this event

Wreaths Across America: Art Sladyk; December 2013;
o       We have asked that the WAA truck make a SW stop in 2014.

OLD BUSINESS:
o       Report on the proposed wall at VMP: Art Sladyk
o       Meeting held with NE Silica for more precise measurements.
O    Solid granite wall estimate: $53K, not counting other donated work.
O       Rough top to be 7 “ wide; back side unpolished.
O    Next steps: Town Council, Park/Rec approvals; Discussion with Building/Grounds; Artist rendition.
O       Art will contact appropriate people regarding step/step procedures to follow.

o       Flags around the center of SW; (Billy Carroll) No report at this time.
O New flags reported to be on Main Street.

NEW BUSINESS: None at this meeting.

The next meeting will be held Monday, May 20, 2013, at 7:30.
