SOUTH WINDSOR PATRIOTIC COMMISSION
February 19, 2013
The meeting was called to order at 7:30 p.m. by Kent Carlson, followed by the recitation of the Pledge of Allegiance.
ATTENDANCE: Peter Anthony, Herb Asplund, Gene Botteron, Kent Carlson, Bill Carroll, Teri Dickey-Gaignat, Len Glasser, Daria Plummer.
MINUTES:
Motion: Dickey-Gaignat/Anthony. Move to accept the minutes of January 14, 2013, as printed, with the addition: two guests from a SW Boy Scout troop were in attendance. Carried.
TREASURER’S REPORT: Oral report presented by Kent Carlson.
- On track with budget; invoice received for $400 for TE Band to Veterans Day Parade.
- Purchase of five gross of flags; 1,000 flags now available for use.
CORRESPONDENCE: Kent Carlson
- Information received and shared on 2013 Policelli Award application.
COMMITTEE REPORTS:
Essay Contest: Kent Carlson [for Roger Anderson] (January-March 1, 2013)
- PR has been excellent to date, with notices on SW Patch and in the Reminder News, JI, and iTowns for the Hartford Courant.
- Applications being taken from the Town Hall.
Evening In The Park: May 18, 2013, status unchanged since previous month.
Memorial Day Parade and Ceremony and flags on graves: May 27, 2013; Len Glasser
- 2013 will be the last year for TE band; 2014 hopefully will yield the formation of a new SWHS marching band.
- Letters have gone out to all regularly participating groups/organizations.
- Safety with SWFD important; truck staging needs to be away from crowds/children.
- Patriotic Commissions wishes to add Del Conroy’s name to the VMP memorial and will remember him in forthcoming ceremonies.
Flag Day flag retirement ceremony: Peter Anthony—June 15, 2013
o Flags retrieved, as needed. Herb, Bill, Jim will assist as needed.
Veterans Day Parade: Kent Carlson—November 4, 2012 (event completed)

Veterans in the Schools: Bill Carroll, Jr. (Monday, November 12, 2012) (event completed)
- TE has contacted Billy, sharing that they wish to have greater involvement in 2013.
Wreaths Across America: Kent Carlson for Art Sladyk (December 15, 2012) (event completed)
- All wreaths retrieved from cemeteries within 1 ½ hours.

OLD BUSINESS:
- Report on the proposed wall at VMP (Art Sladyk) (no report at this meeting)
- Names of SW residents serving in military (Herb Asplund)
- Updates made to wall.
- Herb/Bill will continue to work on accuracy of ranks of those serving currently, as well as updating of names.
- SW will have a Major General, once approval has been given.
- Flags around the center of South Windsor (Billy Carroll)
- Permanent 9” sleeves discussed; quote coming on 20 poles
- Bill continues to gather info on state/town roads.
NEW BUSINESS: None at this meeting.
ANYTHING FOR THE GOOD OF THE COMMITTEE:
- A new American flag is flying at the Community Center.
The next meeting will be held Monday, March 18, 2013, at 7:30.
