Patriotic Commission Minutes 1/14/2013
SOUTH WINDSOR PATRIOTIC COMMISSION
January 14, 2012


The meeting was called to order at 7:30 p.m. by Kent Carlson, followed by the recitation of the Pledge of Allegiance.

ATTENDANCE:
Roger Anderson, Peter Anthony, Herb Asplund, Gene Botteron, Kent Carlson, Bill Carroll, Len Glasser, Daria Plummer, Art Sladyk (alt.).

MINUTES:
Motion: Botteron/Anderson. Move to accept the minutes of December 17, 2012 as printed.  Carried.

TREASURER’S REPORT: Oral report presented by Kent Carlson.  
  • Cost of flags needed for 2013 not yet available
  • Approximately 600 new flags need to be ordered; 450 remain from 2012.
CORRESPONDENCE: None at this time.

COMMITTEE REPORTS:

Essay Contest: Roger Anderson (January-March 1, 2013)
  • Forms have been distributed to all SW schools, including Teen Center.  Forms also to be distributed to East Catholic HS, Goodwin Tech, and Two Rivers MS.
  • Deep appreciation expressed to Teri Dickey-Gaignat for her arrangements with Office Max for the printing of all fliers, using their charitable donation account. Total cost to the Patriotic Commission: $35.00.   
  • Kent will handle publicity through local media, including SW Patch.
Evening In The Park: May 18, 2013, status unchanged since previous month.

Memorial Day Parade and Ceremony and flags on graves: May 27, 2013
  • No band available through Kevin Cooney.
  • Daria will contact SWHS music teacher Jo-Ann Thomas to further discuss band issue.
Flag Day flag retirement ceremony:  Peter Anthony—June 15, 2013
o       Flags retrieved, as needed.  Herb Asplund will assist as needed.

Veterans Day Parade:  Kent Carlson—November 4, 2012 (event completed)

Veterans Day Ceremony:  Kent Carlson—November 11, 2012 (event completed)

Veterans in the Schools: Bill Carroll, Jr.  (Monday, November 12) (event completed)

Wreaths Across America: Art Sladyk (December 15, 2012)
  • Thank you letters sent to all supporting organizations.
  • Boy Scout Troops 62, 186, 390, 880, and several scouts working on Eagle Scout projects all assisted in the laying of wreaths, as did Girl Scouts and members of the community.
  • Number of new veterans being buried in SW increases each year.
  • If Eagle Scout projects cannot or do not identify all graves needing markers (a work in progress), Art has contacts to assist in the identification.
  • Cemetery Association representatives to be invited to our March meeting.
  • Wreaths to be picked up by January 26, 2013.
  • Each grave site allowed one headstone and one footstone.
OLD BUSINESS:
  • Report on the proposed wall at VMP (Art Sladyk)
  • Retail pricing for back side of monument façade is $3,000.
  • Continue to believe that most work that is needed will be donated; fundraisers as needed.
  • Pricing on granite/marble still being sought.
  • One major project remains ahead of this project on the town’s side.
  • Names of SW residents serving in military (Herb Asplund)
  • Updated list sent to Herb by Clerk of Council, D. Reid.
  • Herb/Bill continue to work to obtain photos through family members.
  • Flags around the center of South Windsor (Billy Carroll)
  • Bill to seek information from the VA regarding flag poles.
NEW BUSINESS:
  • Peter Anthony being interviewed for a history preservation project regarding veterans and their service experience.
ANYTHING FOR THE GOOD OF THE COMMITTEE:
  • Len continues to investigate how SW might celebrate the 100th anniversary of WWI. Noted: 50th anniversary of Vietnam War also in 2014.
  • Blue Star Mothers should have special seating at Memorial Day Ceremony.
  • Teen Center coordinator has youth interested in volunteering for various service activities throughout town.  How we might best utilize such help will be discussed further.
The next meeting will be held Monday, February 19, 2013, at 7:30.
