Patriotic Commission Minutes 11/19/2012
SOUTH WINDSOR PATRIOTIC COMMISSION
November 19, 2012


The meeting was called to order at 7:30 p.m. by Kent Carlson, followed by the recitation of the Pledge of Allegiance.

ATTENDANCE:
Roger Anderson, Peter Anthony, Herb Asplund, Gene Botteron, Kent Carlson, Bill Carroll, Bob Hornish, Daria Plummer, Art Sladyk (alt.).

MINUTES:
Motion: Sladyk/Anderson. Move to accept the minutes of September 15 as printed.  Carried.

TREASURER’S REPORT: Presented by Kent Carlson.  There have been no changes since the last meeting.  The only outstanding invoice is for the wreaths laid at VMP on Veterans Day.  Notice was passed on the beauty of this year’s wreaths.

CORRESPONDENCE: A reference was made to the thank you letter (email) from Dave Archibald (SWHS).  The email cited Peter Anthony’s speech among other thanks.  The email will be forwarded to all members by Bill Carroll.

COMMITTEE REPORTS:

Essay Contest, Roger Anderson
  • Submission period changed to January/February (from December/January). Deadline will be Friday, March 1.
  • Entry forms will be on colored paper; sent home in Friday Folders for elementary schools.  Roger to work with Dr. Carter.
  • There will be four award categories: K-2; 3-5; 6-8; 9-12.
  • Awards will be made at the discretion of the Patriotic Commission.
  • All winners will be entitled to ride in the Memorial Day parade.
  • Roger will send forms electronically to commission members for review.
Evening In The Park: May 18, 2013
  • Event status unchanged at this time.
Memorial Day Parade and Ceremony and flags on graves: May 27, 2013
  • Event status unchanged at this time.
Flag Day flag retirement ceremony:  Peter Anthony—June 15, 2013
o       Bins have been cleared out.

Veterans Day Parade:  Kent Carlson—November 4, 2012
  • Event successful.
Veterans Day Ceremony:  Kent Carlson—November 11, 2012
  • Successful event.
  • Music excellent: trumpeters and vocalist (Linda Helkey) cited.
  • Speaker: Lt. Col.  Bob Feher, excellent.
  • Deacon was a veteran and appreciated being asked.
Veterans in the Schools: Bill Carroll, Jr.  (Monday, November 12)
  • Kudos to Bill for arrangements made for SWHS.
  • Programs excellent in the school. OH had students escorting veterans.
  • All schools had some recognition ceremony or activity.
Wreaths Across America: Art Sladyk (December 15, 2012)
  • Donations to ME deadline is November 26; will surpass 2011 total.
  • Met with Dr. Carter, an asst. superintendent, and principals.
  • Possibility of having a helmet into which names of veterans being remembered by students will be placed.
Scouts notified (Boy/Girl Scouts).
Met with cemetery association (Wapping) regarding flags pulled with stakes, with both items disposed of.  Markers on graves essential for WAA.
Suggestion: Invite Wapping Cemetery Association to a spring meeting of the Patriotic Commission to discuss how we both can assist each other in our needs.
  • South Windsor on a five-year plan with WAA.  We are not on a schedule for a wreath delivery with escort at this time.
OLD BUSINESS:
  • Report on the proposed wall at VMP (Art Sladyk): Status unchanged.
  • Herb and Bill will work to update names of SW residents on active duty.
NEW BUSINESS:
  • Possible future speaker from DAV; give SW Human Services information.
ANYTHING FOR THE GOOD OF THE COMMITTEE:
  • Jim Throwe to be inducted into the CT Veterans Hall of Fame.
  • Our website will have a link to the veterans’ website at state level.
  • Possible future discussion topic: assisting with golf tournament for homeless veterans.
The next meeting will be held Monday, Monday, December 17, at 7:30.
