Patriotic Commission Minutes 6/18/2012
SOUTH WINDSOR PATRIOTIC COMMISSION
June 18, 2012


The meeting was called to order at 7:31 p.m. by Kent Carlson, followed by the recitation of the Pledge of Allegiance.

ATTENDANCE:
Roger Anderson, Peter Anthony, Herb Asplund, Gene Botteron, Kent Carlson, ;Len Glasser, Bob Hornish,  Daria Plummer,  Jim Throwe (alt),  Art Sladyk (alt.).

MINUTES:
The minutes of May 21, 2012 were approved. Motion: Sladyk/Anderson. Move to accept the minutes as written.  Carried.

TREASURER’S REPORT: Presented by Kent Carlson.  Flags have been pre-paid and purchased for 2012-13.  The $300 expended for golf carts for the parade will be reimbursed to us by the VFW. Due to only one band at the Memorial Day Parade, less money was expended.

Motion: Asplund/Hornish: Move to purchase $150 in wreaths for South Windsor VMP placements at the December 15, 2012 Wreaths Across America ceremony.  Carried.


CORRESPONDENCE: Daria Plummer has been appointed by the Town Council to fill the unexpired term of Jim Throwe, and Jim will fill Daria’s unexpired term as alternate. Kent reported that he had written to Cary Prague via email thanking him for all of his assistance to the Patriotic Commission, noting Cary’s help regarding signage among other aspects.

COMMITTEE REPORTS:

Essay Contest, Roger Anderson
o       Next year PTOs will be contacted much earlier in the school year.
o       Help needed in 2013 at assembly location for the parade; water needed also for students.
o     Convertibles to be requested; should go into the park, if possible.  


Evening In The Park: Kent Carlson--May 19, 2012
o       Well, well done.  Only positive comments heard about the event.

Memorial Day Parade and Ceremony and flags on graves: May 28, 2012
o       Better communication needed in 2013 for division sign placement for street line up, especially for the Fire Department. FD needs to be on a street where trucks can turn around (So. Satellite Road)
o       Flag selling not allowed; vendor curtailed this year, but enforcement difficult.
o       Scouts need to come into the park.
o       Band will be investigated for next year.

Flag Day flag retirement ceremony:  Peter Anthony--June 16, 2012
o       Approximately 500 flags were collected and burned this year.  Jim Throwe, Bob Moeller, and Peter Anthony were present.

o       Flags on Main Street being investigated (are they still up; need replacement?)
o       Discussion held on placement of flags for patriotic holidays at the center of South Windsor.  Permission would be needed from the Town Council.
  • Committee members requested to put their thoughts in writing and forward them to      Chairperson Carlson.
Veterans Day Parade:  November 4, 2012; we are committed.

Veterans Day Ceremony:  Kent Carlson—November 11, 2012
  • We will have a ceremony on 11 November.  Kent will start process of getting a speaker. Ceremony at VMP at 11 AM.
Veterans in the Schools: Bill Carroll, Jr
  • Date uncertain, as Veterans Day is a Sunday. Bill is working on securing the date from the school system.
Wreaths Across America: Art Sladyk  (December 15, 2012)
  • $195 collected through advertising at the Strawberry Fest and $180 at Picnic in the Park.
OLD BUSINESS:
Report on the proposed wall at VMP:  Art Sladyk
o       Met with graphic artist; ideas great; awaiting draft; then all goes to Carl Reichle and Parks and Recreation.
o       Site work, concrete, electrical: to be donated.
o       Donations will be sought for marble or granite slab.

NEW BUSINESS:
  • Loose bricks in flower box area to be repaired on 6/22/12.
  • Moss to be removed from eagle.
  • Art reported that the VFW received concerns about flag placements for veterans in cemeteries (Wapping, Masonic Hall, Ellsworth).  Some names not included due to lack of information,  and some flags go missing.  Names to be obtained to add to list; number of flags will be ensured. Flags need to be pulled after a period of time.
VA provides medallions that glue to regular gravestones.
  • June is Gay Pride Month, as designated by the military.
ANYTHING FOR THE GOOD OF THE COMMITTEE:

The next meeting will be held Monday, September 17th, at 7:30.
