Patriotic Commission Minutes 02/22/2011
SOUTH WINDSOR PATRIOTIC COMMISSION
REGULAR MEETING – February 22, 2011


The meeting was called to order at 7:30 p.m. and opened by saying the Pledge of Allegiance.

ATTENDEES:
Teri Dickey-Gaignat, Kent Carlson, Herb Asplund, Leonard Glasser, Robert Moeller, Roger Anderson, Jim Throwe, Billy Carroll Jr. Doris Avery and Terry Kyc were ill.

MINUTES:
The December 20, 2010 minutes were approved. The Cecember minutes were used bcause the January meeting was cancelled due to inclement weather.

TREASURER’S REPORT:
Balance $9403.00. Outstanding bills include bus for parade (around $600.00), and contract for fireworks ($3750.00). That leave about $5053.00 not earmarked yet, with Evening in the Park (around $1500) and Memorial Day (around $1500).  

CORRESPONDENCE:

Invitation to nominate someone for the Eugene Policelli Public Service award. No action taken.
Invitation to World War 2 veterans to tell their story at the South Windsor Public library on February 28th. No action required.
COMMITTEE REPORTS:

Essay Contest:
Roger Anderson reported that there were 49 entries to the contest. The entries were divided in the three groups (K-2, 3-5, 6-12) and everyone present to a group. Each group will have three people reviewing and we will tally the results at the March meeting.

Evening In The Park:  May 21, 2011
Kent stated that the fireworks contract was signed and the deposit mailed in. He will be sending out invites to participants before the next meeting. Billy Carroll volunteered to check into better advertising with his contacts in town. Terry said she would distribute posters to the schools and local businesses. Kent said he would place advertising in the local media.

Memorial Day Parade: May 21, 2011
Len Glasser said he had been turned down by his second choice for speaker and would pursue another.
Bob stated that Paul Mozzicato would be available to provide military vehicles for the parade and Chris Lariviere would could provide convertibles for the essay contest winners.
Kent and Len will count the flags on hand and order before the next meeting.

Flag Day Ceremony:  June 21, 2011
It was suggested we ask the boy scout troop in town if the want to do. Peter stated we have a lot of flags.

Veteran’s Day Parade:  2011
No action yet.

Veteran’s Day Ceremony:  November 11, 2011
No action yet


OLD BUSINESS:
Kent said we need more new members. Gary Waterhouse and Eugene Botteron were invited to the meeting as was Frank Intino. None attended. We need to pursue new members   to replace retiring ones.

Herb is still working on the town hall Veterans wall.

NEW BUSINESS:
Jim Throwe reported a flag in bad condition flying at a private home on Governor’s highway. Len said he would find the home and offer to replace it.

Meeting was adjourned at 8:30.

The next meeting will be March 21, 2011 at 7:30 PM
