Patriotic Commission Minutes 10/18/2010
SOUTH WINDSOR PATRIOTIC COMMISSION
REGULAR MEETING – October 18, 2010


The meeting was called to order at 7:30 p.m. and opened by saying the Pledge of Allegiance.

ATTENDEES:

Kent Carlson, Herb Asplund, Robert Moeller, Peter Anthony, James Throwe.  

MINUTES:

The October 18, 2010 minutes were approved after making the following corrections: Under Veteran’s Day Parade, “have received no response from they” was changed to “no response from them’. Under Essay Contest, Grades 6 thru 12,, Subject 2 changed from “What is means” to What it means”.

TREASURER’S REPORT:  Balance $13,478. Does not include cost of Veteran’s Day wreaths (app $325) and cost of bus for T E Middle School band to Hartford Veteran’s Day Parade (app. $600). New balance around #12,550.00.

CORRESPONDENCE:  Kent received a letter from Art Sladyk regarding “Wreaths Across America”. Will discuss later in meeting.
 
COMMITTEE REPORTS:

Veteran’s Day Parade:  November 7, 2010

Publicity ran too early. Publicity in JI, Reminder, S Windsor Life, and Courant ran 2 weeks before event. Next year, run several times for better participation.  

Veteran’s Day Ceremony:  November 11, 2010

Speaker was LTC Scott Simmons, former Patriotic Commission member. Program ran very well.


Essay Contest:  

The contest will run from December 15 to February 1, 2011.
In February, Roger will collect and give to Committee.
In March, Patriotic Committee will determine winners.
In late April, winners will be notified.
In May, Winners will ride in Memorial Day Parade.
All participants will receive a certificate.
Contest is open to all South Windsor students (including private school and home schooled.

1st Place $100.00 Gift card
2nd Place  $50.00 Gift card
3rd Place  $25.00 Gift card

Subjects:

Grades K thru 2: A Poster

“My Favorite Place in South Windsor”

Possible subjects:  Veterans Memorial Park, The Boundless Playground, My School, the Library, Nevers Road Park, Old Post Office.

Grades 3 thru 5 – Essay

Subject:  My Favorite CT Patriot and Why?
         

Grades 6 thru 12 – Essay

Subject 2:  What it means to be a citizen of the U.S.


Evening In The Park:  May 21, 2011

Kent reports no contract for fireworks yet. He will check into it.

Memorial Day Parade:

Leonard will soon be sending letters out looking for a speaker for this event.  .

Flag Day Ceremony:  June 21, 2011 – No report.


OLD BUSINESS:  

New members:

We have a vacancy. Bill Carroll Jr will be approved by next meeting. Kent requested that we invite prospective members to meetings to see what we do before we have openings next year.

Election:

Held last month. No changes.

NEW BUSINESS:

Wreaths Across America:

American Legion (Art Sladyk) will take care of this event which will take place in December at the Veterans Memorial Park.  They want us to approve (done) and participate. Agreed we should watch this year and not commit to more.

High School Speakers on Veteran‘s Day:

Roger reported it was successful. Kent suggested that next year we do assign schools to attend and have more publicity so we can get more speakers. Roger wants to send certificates of appreciation to participants.

Disability Program for Veterans:

Gary Waterhouse, a certified Veteran’s Counselor, want to have a public meeting about Veteran’s benefits and wants the Patriotic Commission to help. Agreed it was a good idea.

Any other new business:

Peter Anthony commented on his experience in Manchester at their Veteran’s Day ceremony. He read the speech he gave. It was about his experiences in Korea and about being a Veteran. The committee agreed that it was excellent.

Jim Throwe talked about his speech at the St Francis of Assisi ladies group. The speech was about the history of Veteran’s Day and was well received.

Bob Moeller said he gave a speech at the Senior Center on Wednesday and it was well received.

Meeting was adjourned at 8:30.

Our next regular meeting will be December 20, 2010 at 7:30 P.M.
