Patriotic Commission Minutes 10/18/2010
SOUTH WINDSOR PATRIOTIC COMMISSION
REGULAR MEETING – October 18, 2010


The meeting was called to order at 7:30 p.m. and opened by saying the Pledge of Allegiance.

ATTENDEES:

Teri Dickey-Gaignat, Kent Carlson, Herb Asplund, Leonard Glasser, Robert Moeller, Peter Anthony, James Throwe, Terrie Kyc and Doris Avery.

MINUTES:

The September 20, 2010 minutes were approved after making the following corrections:  Under Essay Contest, change deadline date from February 1st 2010 to 2011; Flag Day Ceremony add who is the web site person and under New Business Herb Asplund paid for the flag in the Sprenkel Room and not for the Madden Room.

TREASURER’S REPORT:  Balance $13,500.00.  Spent $22.00 for flag.  Report filed with secretary.  

CORRESPONDENCE:  Kent Carlson received an E-mail from Lorrie Coelho, Vice President of the Ladies Society at St. Francis of Assisi Church in South Windsor looking for a speaker for their luncheon meeting to be held on November 10th at 12:30 p.m. in the church hall.  James Throwe will volunteer to be their speaker.
COMMITTEE REPORTS:

Veteran’s Day Parade:  November 7, 2010

The following groups have been invited: Middle School Band, South Windsor Police.  Veteran groups have been informed, but have received no response from they.  Buses are available at Town Senior Center for people that want to participate in the parade.  

Veteran’s Day Ceremony:  November 11, 2010

James Throwe still waiting to hear from Col. Cody as our possible speaker for this event. Flowers are all set.  8 bricks have been purchased and hopefully will be placed

Essay Contest:  

Roger Anderson E-mail the following possible subjects:

Grades K thru 2 – Poster

“My Favorite Place in South Windsor”

Possible subjects:  Veterans Memorial Park, The Boundless Playground, My School, the Library, Nevers Road Park, Old Post Office.

Subject 2 – My Favorite Holiday – No go

Grades 3 thru 5 – Essay

Subject:  My Favorite CT Patriot and Why?
         Name a South Windsor historical landmark      
           and why it is important

Grades 6 thru 12 – Essay

Subject:  How does South Windsor government affect the                    lives of young people in South Windsor?

Subject 2:  What is means to be a citizen of the U.S.

We should decide on the different topics by our next meeting.

Evening In The Park:  May 21, 2011

No report.

Memorial Day Parade:

Leonard will soon be sending letters out looking for a speaker for this event.  More info to follow at a later date.

Flag Day Ceremony:  June 21, 2011 – No report.

Note:

Kevin Foley and Roger Tripp are the contact people for the flags on old Main Street.

OLD BUSINESS:  

Herb reported that Billy Carroll ® would be an alternate for the Patriotic Commission.  More to follow.

NEW BUSINESS:

Wreaths Across America

American Legion will take care of this event which will take place in December at the Veterans Memorial Park.  More information to follow.

Election of Officers:

Herb Asplund made a motion to approve the following:

        Chairperson                     Kent Carlson
        Vice-Chairperson                Leonard Glasser
        Secretary/Treasurer             Doris Avery

Secretary cast 1 ballot for slate of officers.
Motion passed.  

Meeting was adjourned at 8:10.

Our next regular meeting will be November 15, 2010 at 7:30 p.m.
