SOUTH WINDSOR PATRIOTIC COMMISSION
REGULAR MEETING – September 20, 2010





The meeting was called to order at 7:30 p.m. and opened by saying the pledge of allegiance.

ATTENDEES:

Kent Carlson, Robert Moeller, Terrie Kyc, Herb Asplund, Peter Anthony, Roger Anderson, Teri Dickey-Gaignat, James Throwe, Leonard Glasser and Doris Avery.

MINUTES:

The June 21, 2010 minutes were approved.

CORRESPONDENCE:

Kent reported that we are accepted for the Veterans Day Parade in Hartford on November 7, 2010.

Herb reported that he has received several brick applications.

TREASURER’S REPORT:  $13,000.00.  No report filed with secretary.  

COMMITTEE REPORTS:

Veteran’s Parade: - November 7, 2010.

Accepted to march in this year’s parade.  Invites will be sent out to Middle School and town officials by end of October.

Veteran’s Day Ceremony: - November 11, 2010.

Teri Dickey-Gaignat will get (5) wreaths for the ceremony.  School is in session this year.  It was noted that David Archibald is looking for veterans to come to the schools.  Roger Anderson will assist David in finding veterans.  More to follow on this ceremony.

Essay Contest:

Roger Anderson reported that he met with David Archibald  and David suggested we have three groupings this year:  K-2 – posters; 3-5 – writings; 6-12 write on suggested topics (topics to follow).  It was noted that there is not too much participation from the high school!

The following is, a suggested agenda, to follow:

September thru October – pick topics – any suggestions from Patriotic Commission Members and David Archibald;

November- gets posters and information out to the schools;  

By mid December – get Essay applications to schools; Contest deadline February 1st, 2010.

At our March meeting, the entries would be given to the Patriotic members to read and in April decide on the top 3 winners from each category.

Top 3 winners $100.00 Borders Gift Certificate; second place; $50.00 Borders Gift Certificate and third place; $25.00 Borders Gift Certificate.

Kent Carlson will help Roger with publicity; place ad in J.I. and the Reminder and South Windsor Life.

Evening In The Park: Information to follow.

Memorial Day:  Information to follow.

Flag Day Ceremony:

Robert Moeller reported that the event was very well organized.  Boy Scout Troop #186 involved.    Peter has picked up used flags.  We need to order more flags.  Leonard will get count of flags.

It was also noted, any information to be placed on the web site, should contact John Marchassault, who the web site person.
Regular Meeting

OLD BUSINESS:

New Members:  Herb has a name of a person who is interested.  More information to follow.

Record storage:

Robert suggested, the old post office could be used for storing of papers, etc.  Need to keep checking on the availability.

Herb will gather information for the “updating” of our Military Personnel bulletin board in the town hall.  Kent will help Herb with this project.

A motion was made (and carried) to pay Herb Asplund $22.00 for one of the 2 flags he purchased, one for the Sprenkel Room and the other for the Madden Room.

Election of Officers:

To be held at our October Meeting.

Meeting adjourned at 8:15 p.m.

Our next regular meeting will be October 18, 2010.
