Patriotic Commission Minutes 11/15/08
SOUTH WINDSOR PATRIOTIC COMMISSION
REGULAR MEETING – November 15, 2008


The meeting was called to order at 7:30 p.m. and opened by saying the Pledge of Allegiance.

ATTENDEES:

Robert Moeller, Peter Anthony, Herb Asplund, Kent Carlson, James Throwe, John Stonoha and  Doris Avery.  

MINUTES: The October 20, 2008 minutes were approved.

CORRESPONDENCE:

Kent received a memo from the Town of South Windsor Human Resource Dept Re:  Roberts Rules of Order – Training.  A meeting has been scheduled for Monday, November 24, 2008 from 6:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m.  The training will take place in the Council Chambers.  Town Attorney Duncan Forsyth will be the presenter.  Herb Asplund and John Stonoha will attend.

Kent also received the reappointment letters for the following:  Herb Asplund, M. Terrie Kyc (alternate), Leonard Glasser, and Kent Carlson.

TREASURER’S REPORT:    $13,500.00.  Report filed with secretary.

COMMITTEE REPORTS:

Veteran’s Parade: - November 2, 2008

In attendance this year from the Patriotic Commission were Kent Carlson, Doris Avery, John Stonoha, Robert Moeller and James Throwe.  American Legion Post #133, Councilman Pelky and the T.E. Middle School Band.  No show from the VFW.
We received good publicity.  A new sign was made to put on the van “South Windsor Welcomes Vets”.

Veterans Day: - November 11, 2008

The Veterans Ceremony at the Park (South Windsor) was very well attended.

Essay Contest: -  December 1, 2008 to January 31, 2009

John will contact Mr. Archibald regarding the entries.

Evening in the Park – May 16, 2009

Kent reported that the fireworks have been ordered and the invitations will be sent out January –February.

Memorial Day – May 25, 2009

Kent has contacted the Hartford Magnate Middle School for possible participation in the Memorial Day Parade.  More to follow on this.

OLD BUSINESS:  None.

NEW BUSINESS:  

Herb shared, with the commission, the condition of a flag he had to use recently at the high school.  This opened a discussion of other flags in other schools with torn and discolored flags.  Kent will write a letter to the superintendent of schools, regarding the conditions of the flags.

Meeting was adjourned at 8:00 p.m.

Our next regular meeting will be December 15, 2008,
at 7:30 p.m.
