Patriotic Commission Minutes 12-16-2013
SOUTH WINDSOR PATRIOTIC COMMISSION
December 16, 2013

The meeting was called to order at 7:30 p.m. by Kent Carlson, followed by the recitation of the Pledge of Allegiance.

ATTENDANCE: Roger Anderson, Peter Anthony, Herb Asplund, Gene Botteron, Kent Carlson, , Len Glasser, Bob Hornish, Daria Plummer, Art Sladyk, James Throwe

MINUTES:
Motion: Sladyk/Hornish:  Move to accept the minutes of November 18, 2013, as printed. Carried.

TREASURER’S REPORT: Oral report presented by Kent Carlson; accepted by consensus.  
  • To date, budget remains on target.
  • Brick fund has been used for engraving of Patriotic Commission plaques for deceased members (T. Kyc and checking on J. Levitow).
  • Commission hopes budget will allow for large signage for the Memorial Day Parade.
CORRESPONDENCE:
  • Thank you note received for Veterans Day Parade participation.
  • Ray Favreau acknowledged oversight that VMP website makes no mention of veterans and has asked the Patriotic Commission to develop wording, as well as to submit pictures that the Commission would find appropriate. Members asked to send suggestions to Art Sladyk. Members also expressed concern that there was no town signage “to” Veterans Memorial Park.  Art will share this concern with Ray.
 
COMMITTEE REPORTS:

Essay Contest: Roger Anderson
  • 2014 Essay Contest on track. Fliers to be distributed the first week of January.
Evening In The Park: Kent Carlson
  • New inflatables may be available for the evening, as well as an increase from two to three stations.
               
Memorial Day Parade and Ceremony: Len Glasser
  • January begins roll up of entrants.
  • SW is second on the list for the WW I ambulance. WWI vehicles are important as the nation celebrates the 100th anniversary of WWI.
  • Possible source: restored military vehicles from private collectors.
Flag Day flag retirement ceremony:  Peter Anthony—no report at this time.

Veterans Day Parade:  Kent Carlson—event completed.

Veterans Day Ceremony:  Kent Carlson—event completed.

Veterans in the Schools:  Bill Carroll, Jr.—event completed.

Wreaths Across America: Art Sladyk
  • Signage considered critical/key in the success of attendance at the VMP ceremony.
  • 2014 dates: 12/8/14—State Capitol; 12/13/14—VMP ceremony.
Wall Behind the Monument:  Art Sladyk
  • Letters will be sent to members of the SW business community and presented at next meeting.
  • Wall Committee meetings will commence in January.
OLD BUSINESS:  
  • A liaison between the town and CLP must negotiate for flags to be put on telephone/light poles. Maintenance of flags must be considered.
  • Kent and Len will work up a prototype of signage for Parade.  Cost includes large signs, changeable date headers, and hardware.  Approximately $90/sign when completed.
            
NEW BUSINESS: None at this time.

ANYTHING FOR THE GOOD OF THE COMMITTEE:
  • The plaque commemorating past member M. Terri Kyc’s service on the Commission has been completed.  One needs to be done for John Levitow.
The next meeting will be held Tuesday, January 21, 2014, at 7:30.
