Patriotic Commission Minutes 09-16-2013
SOUTH WINDSOR PATRIOTIC COMMISSION
September 16, 2013

The meeting was called to order at 7:30 p.m. by Kent Carlson, followed by the recitation of the Pledge of Allegiance.

ATTENDANCE: Roger Anderson, Peter Anthony, Herb Asplund, Gene Botteron, Kent Carlson, Len Glasser, Bob Hornish, Art Sladyk, James Throwe.

MINUTES:
Motion: Sladyk/Anthony:  Move to accept the minutes of June 17, 2013, as printed. Carried.

TREASURER’S REPORT: Written report presented by Kent Carlson.  
O Formal budget for new year presented.
Motion: Throwe/Anderson:  Move to accept the report as prepared.  Carried.

CORRESPONDENCE: Thank you letter from Sophie Crane, essay contest winner who read her essay at the June meeting.
 
COMMITTEE REPORTS:

Essay Contest: (Roger Anderson):
       No report at this time. Roger is waiting to meet new contact from high school.      

Evening In The Park: (Kent Carlson); Fireworks contract completed
              
 Memorial Day Parade and Ceremony: (Len Glasser);
O No report
o  Art has contact for WW1 ambulance
o  Len will try to get the WW1 tank from National Guard
o  Work on money for extra band
o  Signs for parade

Flag Day flag retirement ceremony:  Peter Anthony;
   O Peter retired flags one week late due to scheduling conflict at fire station
       o  Peter is collecting flags

Veterans Day Parade:  (Kent Carlson); November 3, 2013
o       Confirmed we are in the parade.
O  Was contacted by TE principal. She wants band to march. We will pay for bus. Kent arranged with parade committee.
O  Kent will invite town officials to march with us.
Veterans Day Ceremony:  (Kent Carlson)—November 11, 2013.
   o  Requested speaker from CT National Guard. No response yet.
  o   Requested assistance from high school (singer, trumpeters)
  o  Confirmed Chaplain, Reverend Doug Rowse
O Teri ordered wreaths. She will pick up and bring to ceremony
      
       
Veterans in the Schools:  (Bill Carroll, Jr.) –November 11,   2013—no report at this time.
       
Wreaths Across America: (Art Sladyk); December 14, 2013
o       State ceremony will be December. South Windsor is hosting.

Wall behind the Monument:  (Art Sladyk)
O Town council approved fund raising
O Tom Field has volunteered to solicit funds
O  Kent has posted information on our web site
O  Art requested members seek out state and federal and private grants (South Windsor has a matching grant of $5000).
O Possible banquet at Maneelys?
o   Kent suggested a list of possible donors
o   Art suggested putting up signs in town
o   Gene suggested working through Chamber of Commerce list and putting something in their mailing list.
Motion by Jim Throwe, seconded by Roger Anderson: Form sub committee with Art and Pete as Co-Chairs.  Approved.
o Herb; try to get article on South Windsor Patch
o Kent: Reminder goes into every home in South Windsor
o Herb: contact original donors to VMP. Bob Moeller has list.
o Jim: Cary mentioned setting up a tax exempt foundation so people could get a tax  write-off. Money would flow through the town Finance department.

OLD BUSINESS:
      o Flags around town center. Art says East Granby has attached
             to light poles. Talk to town manager about contact. Kent said we have them on old
              Main Street and they require maintenance .
       o Signs for Memorial Day parade. Art working.
       o    Anniversaries of WW1. Len working on it                                     
       
NEW BUSINESS:
o       None

The next meeting will be held Monday, October21 2013, at 7:30.
