SOUTH WINDSOR PATRIOTIC COMMISSION
March 18, 2013
The meeting was called to order at 7:30 p.m. by Kent Carlson, followed by the recitation of the Pledge of Allegiance.
ATTENDANCE: Roger Anderson, Peter Anthony, Herb Asplund, Gene Botteron, Kent Carlson, Bill Carroll, Teri Dickey-Gaignat, Len Glasser, Bob Hornish, Art Sladyk, Jim Throwe.
MINUTES:
Motion: Anderson/Anthony. Move to accept the minutes of February 19, 2013, as printed. Carried.
TREASURER’S REPORT: Written report presented by Kent Carlson.
o On track with budget
o Balance $8205 as of March 18.

o Information received and shared on 2013 CT Veterans Parade
o Anderson, Anthony, Hornish, Plummer reappointed to Patriotic Committee
o Proof of 2012 Town Report section on Patriotic Commission
Motion: Sladyk/Asplund. Move to let guest, Jeff Virr, speak before committee reports. Carried.
Jeff Virr is Superintendent of the Main Street cemeteries. He will keep us apprised of any new Veterans graves in his cemeteries and will allow us to keep the flags from Memorial Day until “Wreaths Across America” wherever practical. He thanked us for the cleanup of the wreaths. We thanked him for his assistance with the GPS mapping of his cemeteries. His point of contact is Art Sladyk.

Essay Contest: Roger Anderson : January-March 1, 2013
o 56 entries received, with all age groups represented
o Entries distributed to members to read and evaluate before next meeting.
Evening In The Park: Kent Carlson ; May 18, 2013
o Invitations to participate mailed out
o Bobby T, caterer last year, out of business
o Jaycees considering providing food
Memorial Day Parade and Ceremony and flags on graves: Len Glasser; May 27, 2013
o Requesting speaker from CTNG, perhaps Bill Adams
o E mails will be going out to all regularly participating groups/organizations.
o Wants to honor Del Conroy at ceremony, plaque already ordered for monument
o Del Conroy was one of the original members of the Patriotic Commission
O Art Sladyk is working with scouts. Better coordination for the ceremony needed
Flag Day flag retirement ceremony: Peter Anthony; June 15, 2013
o Flags retrieved, as needed. Herb, Bill, Jim will assist as needed.
Veterans Day Parade: Kent Carlson; November 3, 2012
o Application received
o Sent information to Timothy Edwards band director and Police Honor Guard
Veterans Day Ceremony: Kent Carlson—November 11, 2013

Veterans in the Schools: Bill Carroll, Jr.
o Friday, November 8, 2013 is our expected date for the event
Wreaths Across America: Art Sladyk ;December 15, 2012;
o American Legion is doing a ceremony at the state capital.

OLD BUSINESS:
o Report on the proposed wall at VMP; Art Sladyk
o Received estimates for granite facing over cement
O Received estimates for solid granite
O Lots of site work expected to be donated
O Jim Throwe will approach some contacts for donations/materials
O Next step is talk to town council after numbers are firmer
O Would like to complete in 2014
o Flags around the center of South Windsor; Billy Carroll
O Permanent 9” sleeves estimates around $9600
o Will need several clearances for right of ways
o Need to delay until better estimates, funds source identified
Øo Bill continues to gather info on state/town roads.
NEW BUSINESS: None at this meeting.
ANYTHING FOR THE GOOD OF THE COMMITTEE:
o Vietnam Memorial ceremony on 30 March in front of Armory.
O The names of the deceased will be read.
The next meeting will be held Monday, April 15, 2013, at 7:30.
