COMMITTEE REPORTS:

Essay Contest:
There will be 3 groups.
Grades K-2 will do a poster “My favorite historical place in Connecticut”. A write up explaining the poster is not required.
Grades 3-5 and 6-12 will be an essay “My favorite patriot and why”
It was discussed about the fairness of judging grades 6-12 on an essay when the level of writing skills might be different. It was decided that when the essays are assigned to be judged, the grade the contestant is in will be added. It was also decided that the essays will be judged by more members of the group. K-2 posters will be judged by all. The others will be split up, so 5 members will look at each group.
Roger stated he will have the contact information to the PTO officers to promote the contest. Terry asked about the Magnet schools and Roger said he had the contact information. The information will be publicized in local media.
Dates of the contest will be 15 December through 31 January 2012. That will give the commission two months to review the essays.

Veteran’s Day Ceremony:  November 11, 2011
Very good attendance. Colonel William Adams gave a great speech.

Veterans in the Schools: November 11, 2011.
The ceremony at the school was good. There were not many speakers at the classes, but all were covered.

Wreaths Across America: December 10, 2011.
The American Legion is running but we are supporting it by attending. The Legion reports that they have sold over 400 wreaths, enough to place wreaths on one half of the veterans graves in South Windsor.

OLD BUSINESS:
Publicity: Kent has submitted information about Veteran’s Day activities to the JI, Courant, Reminder, and South Windsor Life magazine. We had some coverage but very little. Herb recommended personal phone calls to the reporters that cover South Windsor.

The town website is still not accurate. Kent has requested it be updated.

NEW BUSINESS:
The bricks at Veterans Memorial Park needs work. Gene Botteron stated he will work on it in the spring. The brick fund will pay for it.

Herb stated that we are now authorized 10 regular members and 2 alternates. Kent asked Herb and Jim to get the slots filled through their town committees.

Kent said a couple of the dates on the town website were incorrect. He would request they be changed.

Meeting was adjourned at 8:15.
