                Minutes of Joint Meeting
South Windsor Economic Development Commission and Board of Education
                April 2, 2002
Purpose:

A joint meeting of South Windsor
Participants:

Approximately a dozen EDC and BOE members participated including M. Anthony, EDC Chairperson, J. Snyder, Vice-Chair of the BOE and Dr. J. Wood, Supt. of Schools; W. Hunicke facilitated.

Agenda:

1. Highlights of current EDC activities and economic projections including plan to develop a
2. School District outlook for the next few years including goals, strategic plan, economic implications, other issues and trends  

3. Discussion/Brainstorming: future needs, actions that can be taken to work better together to meet the needs of the Community

General:

South Windsor implemented a Strategic Planning Process to help coordinate and integrate the efforts of Boards, Commissions and other governing groups.  Education and Economic Development are two of the Town
EDC Highlights:

The EDC Chair and other members summarized recent activities and 2002 priorities.  Points of discussion included;

·       Tax Base
·       Business Retention Survey
Action Item: it was agreed that a copy of the survey would be made available to the BOE and that survey results on educational topics will be shared when available; responsibility
·       Economic Development Networking
·       EDC Subcommittees
o       Research
o       Marketing
o       Community Education
·       Community Understanding of Economic Development
Action Item: the possibility of offering EDC Guest Speakers to PTO meetings will be explored along with other communication channels

Board of Education Highlights:

The Superintendent of Schools and BOE members summarized recent activities and shared some of their current issues and concerns;

·       Funding - The BOE recently completed this yearbe additional costs to deliver the level of education that the Community expects.  Economic Development could help provide some of this funding.
·       Facilities have to live with them for the next 20+ years, so they have to be the right choices.
·       Focus
·       Communications
Opportunities To Work Together:

·       It was suggested that the Town
·       In addition to the above items, participants expressed interest in sharing information via meeting agendas and minutes.  It was pointed out that individuals could sign up for notification of when these are issued through the Town
·       The possibility of establishing
Action Item: EDC and BOE to evaluate
·       There was interest in both meeting again and in possibly meeting to share information on a quarterly basis.  
Action Item: desire, date and location for next meeting to be established; Monday, June 10 was mentioned, or later that week; responsibility - EDC to propose a date.
