Town Council Public Hearing (Bd of Ed Computers) Minutes 6/21/2010
PUBLIC HEARING MINUTES

June 21, 2010
7:15 p.m.

South Windsor Council Chambers

PURPOSE:        To receive citizen input on an appropriation of $399,105 from the Capital and Non-Recurring Expenditure Account to fund the Board of Education Computer Improvement Program

Mayor Pelkey called the Public Hearing to order at 7:06 p.m.; and requested that the Clerk of the Council read the call of the meeting (a copy of which is attached hereto).  There were approximately twenty (20) people present in the audience.

Mayor Pelkey asked if there was anyone from the public that would like to speak.

Mayor Pelkey then recessed this public hearing in order to call the 7:25 p.m. public hearing to order.  The public hearing reconvened at 7:26 p.m.

Mayor Pelkey asked if there was anyone from the public that would like to speak.

Mr. Larry Torff, 521 Quarry Brook Drive came before the Town Council to speak in favor of this item.  He stated that he feels Capital Projects should be approved when the project is going to be underway.  The Board of Education appropriation seems reasonable and he is in support of it.

Ms. Kristin Heckt, 3 French Lane came forward and stated that the 21st century work place requires highly literate, technologically sound working people.  It is our duty as a town and as a school system to provide that for our students so that when they enter the work place they are ready and equipped to work and be effective members of our society.  Ms. Heckt urged the Town Council to pass this in its entirety.

Following comments from the audience, Mayor Pelkey asked for a Straw Vote, the results of which were as follows:

Those in support of an appropriation of $399,105 from the Capital and Non-Recurring Expenditure Account to fund the Board of Education Computer Improvement Program:  - 4

Those in opposition of an appropriation of $399,105 from the Capital and Non-Recurring Expenditure Account to fund the Board of Education Computer Improvement Program:  - 0

Mayor Pelkey informed the public that there would be a vote on this item at the Town Council Regular Meeting of July 6, 2010.

The public hearing was closed at 7:27 p.m.

Respectfully submitted,
