Park and Recreation Committee
Minutes of the Meeting
July 11, 2012

Commissioners in Attendance:

Al Larson, Rob O’Connor, Andy Paterna, John Caldwell, Dave Romejko, Katie Graham and Ray Favreau.

Meeting called to order at 7:35 pm by Al Larson.

Public Participation:  None

South Windsor Food Alliance:  There were 475 people at the Farmer’s Market.  They had pony rides and music plus vendors.  The SWFA is still looking for a place for their winter market.  The church on Graham Road was turned down.

The committee is trying to get the Town Council to endorse a composting program at the schools along with SWALPC.  

South Windsor Park and Recreation is promoting t-shirts for special needs at a price of $12 each or 2 or more at $10 each.  We are selling them at camps and the concerts on Thursday nights at Evergreen Walk and Veterans Memorial Park.  

Open Space Task Force:  No Meeting in August.
There is a lease to farmers on Priest property.
Trying to get a sponsor to lease or buy a box trailer with a lock so the scout troops and OSTF can be on board to help on working on trails, etc.

Skate Park:  The kids from the skate park have reduced the group to 9.  They picked a subcommittee to report to the town.

Park Security:  Veterans Memorial Park, Rotary Pavilion and Rye Street Park are having issues with vandalism.  Chief Reed and Clay Major, SW Maintenance Manager, are working on a proposal to improve security at the three sites with camera surveillance.  

Town Council:  The Town Council is going to cut the budget from the Capital Project from $1.5 million to an adjusted version of $1 million.

Report of the Park and Recreation Director:  Ray talked about the following:
  • Synthetic turf on fields
  • 220 x 360 field behind Community Building
  • Parking 188 cars behind the Community Building
  • Lighting at Never’s Field
  • Realigning baseball fields
Other Business:

Pickle Ball striping at Timothy Edwards tennis courts was a success.  

The floors at Ellsworth and South Windsor High School are done.  

The all purpose field had some issues with the drainage but it is now draining well.

There is talk about reducing the bleachers in the High School to 5 or 6 rows with adjustable locking system.

There was a general discussion concerning the new magnet school on Chapel Road and the possibility of new fields.

Al Larson made a motion to let Rob O’Connor with the Trails and Bikeways give the right to decide what paths are to be paved.

Bark Park is having a pet wash next to the dog park.

Connecticut Recreation Parks Association is having its annual golf tournament on Thursday, September 20 at Rockledge Country Club at 289 South Main Street, West Hartford.  Registration starts at 8:00 AM and shotgun begins at 9:00 AM.  It is $75pp for a foursome or $95 per individual.
