Parks and Recreation Commission
Minutes of the Meeting
April 11, 2007

Meeting called to order:        7:35 p.m.

Commissioners in Attendance:    Andy Paterna, Rich Mabey, Jim Snow, Al Larson,
Ray Favreau, Rob O'Connor, Dan Rezende

Also in Attendance:             None

Minutes of the April Meeting were approved and seconded.

Public Input:                   None

Open Space Task Force:  Jim Snow;  Right of way issues still being looked at with
regard to the Dzen property - not settled as of this time.

Report of the Recreation Director:              Ray Favreau

VMP:    Pool Opening 6/2/07 - on schedule.

Community Center:  Delivery of new furniture by mid-late May.

Wapping Tennis Courts:  Complaints regarding conditions by high school team - only
able to use half the courts (cracks).  Complaint passed on to Parks & Grounds Division of Public Works.

On Line Registration:    Going well - 23 % at this stage.

Egg Hunt:  Cold!  1300 kids - a bit down from previous years but considering weather conditions - a strong showing.

24th Fishing Derby:  4/21 Dzen Pond.

Youth Sports Culture Initiative:  Guest Speaker:  Youth Sports forum "The Role of MOM in Youth Sports" presented by author Booke de Lench on Tuesday, May 1st.

"R" Magazine:  Largest ever - New Flag Football Program.

Boundless Playground:  $35,000 of equipment being delivered 4/12.  Two more trucks ($137,000) next week.  Late June Grand Opening planned.

Skate Park Workshop:  Attended by Ray Favreau on April 3rd - discussed a couple of manuals - future discussions planned.

Lawrence Road Park:  Drawings on the way - lawsuit still stalling development.

4th R (Before and After School Program):  Ray attended a difficult meeting with South Windsor Day Care Providers on 4/10/07.  Busing concerns from private centers - concerned about losing this service.  Meetings with all principals at schools began the week of 4/9.  Phones have been ringing off the hook - interest appears to be very strong.  All sites will be self reliant - cell phones, laptops, storage units, equipment, staff uniforms, badges, etc..

Resolution for Rye Street Park - Wapping Fair - Steep Grant being drafted so that PARC may proceed with the development of the athletic fields at Rye Street Park.
