Town of Shirley - Social Media Policy
The purpose of this policy is to provide standards and procedures for the appropriate use of social media regarding town matters.
The Town of Shirley is the owner and administrator of its social media profiles and pages, and considers the pages another avenue for building community while making town news and happenings more accessible. Members of the community are encouraged to interact and engage on the pages.
The guidelines below are intended to help guide engagement between the Town of Shirley and its citizens, to improve communication, and to ensure the Town’s social media pages remain consistent and reliable sources of information.
  • The Town's social media pages will not be monitored 24/7. If there is an emergency, please call 911 or the proper authorities.
  • The Town of Shirley welcomes a person's right to express his/her opinion and encourages posters to comment on issues relating to the Town of Shirley. Comments may be monitored and are subject to removal at the discretion of the Town. Certain postings and comments will not be permitted, including, but not limited to:
  • Comments not related to the original topic
  • Profane, obscene, violent, or pornographic content and/or language
  • Content that promotes discrimination on the basis of race, creed, color, religion, age, gender, sexual orientation, or natural origin
  • Defamatory or personal attacks
  • Threats
  • Comments relative to political campaigns
  • Solicitation
  • Violation of any federal, state, or local law
  • Illegal activity
  • Comments including personal information about someone, which violates that person’s privacy
  • Comments regarding pending litigation
  • Anonymous comments
  • Participation in the Town’s social media profiles is at the user’s own risk. Users take personal responsibility for their comments, username and any information provided.
  • Any comments deemed to be a threat to any town officials, employees, citizens, local businesses, etc. are taken seriously and may be subject to review by authorities.
  • Comments made on Town of Shirley social media posts do not reflect the opinions of the Town of Shirley.
  • Town of Shirley social media accounts are subject to the Massachusetts Public Records Law (Chapter 7, Section 4, Clause 26).
Posting on the Town pages constitutes acceptance of these terms. Shirley Social Media is moderated by the Shirley Communication Committee and the Board of Selectmen.
