CONSTRUCTION UPDATE
  • Library/Learning Commons
  • Joe Berry provided an update on the construction schedule.
  • Exterior finishes are going up. The terra cotta and veneer is expected to be complete by November. All of the final windows are in.
The majority of the work over the winter will be on interior finishes.
  • The turnover date to the university is on schedule for the summer of 2013.
  • Mr. Berry added that there has been vandalism and break ins at the construction site. These incidents include an attempted break in at a storage area, spray painting, and rocks being thrown at the installed windows. Private security is in place as are cameras to monitor the site. The security company continues to work closely with campus police.
  • Phase II Demolition
  • Mr. Berry stated that it has come to the attention of the Division of Capital Assent Management that the EPA is in the process of changing regulations that would allow for significant cost savings for the remaining demolition. DCAM anticipates the announcement of these changes in the near future and is holding off on accepting bids until these changes are in place. There is still an end goal of demolishing the existing building by the opening of the new facility.
  • College Drive will reopen after the Phase II demo is complete.
  • Fitness & Recreation Center
  • Leif Lamoray from Leftfield, Inc. was not able to attend the meeting. Adria Leach provided an update on the construction schedule:
  • Site work continues and the contractor will mobilize in the beginning of October for Geopier installation of the foundation system. Once the geopiers begin, the installation will take approximately 1 month. After geopiers, footings and foundation will begin.
ISSUES IN PROGRESS
  • Neighborhood Disturbances
  • The group reported that there have been some incidents on the bike path and in Pickman Park involving smoking and noise. One member noted that the campus police have been more vigilant in patrolling the bike path.
  • Alumni Field Lights
  • Ms. Leach reported that facilities has determined that there are multiple circuits that run to these lights that may give the university some flexibility in the number of lights that can be turned on. Facilities and athletics will do testing after dark next week to see what configurations may work for intramural sports.
  • As of now, activity on the field stops at 10:30 pm and lights go out at 10:45 pm at the latest. The lights are set toto go out 15 minutes after the activity and all usage is pre-set so lights will turn off sooner if activity ends before 10:30 pm. The varsity season ends in early November, so intramurals will play earlier.
  • Salem State University Community Open House
  • Ms. Leach announced that the university will hold its second annual Community Open House on Saturday, September 29, 2012, from 12:30 – 4 pm. She handed out a program listing to all in attendance.
NEW BUSINESS
  • Back to School Traffic
  • Jack Hoar stated that the police details used when classes started were very helpful, although the detail near the Central Campus parking lot across from the Salem Diner may not be necessary.
  • Traffic around the resident students move in was discussed. Ms. Leach informed the group that residence life is working with campus police on coordination for next year and is discussing potential for a staggered move in process.
