SalemRecycles Meeting Minutes
Tuesday, July 28, 2015
6:30p 3rd Floor 120 Washington Street, Salem.

Members Present: Tony Keck, Lynn Murray, Myrna Soper, Nancy Gilberg, Geri Yuhas, Carol Hautau, Beth Melillo, Julie Rose, Flora Tonthat, Susan Yochelson, Liz Vago

New Business
  • Approval June 2 Minutes - Approved
  • Book Swap September 19 – Members passed around the schedule for volunteers and distributed flyers to hang up in Salem advertising the upcoming swap.  Geri Yuhas will coordinate flyer distribution with help from other members.  Discussion about displaying upcycling information and information regarding Waste Management changes.
  • Reminder to mark your calendar for November 21 – Textile Drive.
  • Review of open meeting law and what can and can’t be discussed via email.
  • Waste Management timeline for distributions of carts has been moved forward to September with a possible start date on trash routes in early October.
                
Old Business
  • Community outreach  - Zero waste Pizza event committee Nancy Gilberg, Beth Melillo, Susan Yochelson, and Carol Hautau discuss upcoming August 3rd event.  Volunteers from SalemRecycles and the YMCA will create a zero waste event at the Salem’s Best Pizza competition by composting all food scraps, paper plates, napkins and pizza boxes in conjunction with Black Earth Compost.
  • Cigarette Butt Recycling Update and Promotion – Cigarette butt bins have been re-stickered and moved to better locations.  If there are further desires to move cigarette bins, or to have a cigarette bin placed near a downtown business then community members can contact Julie Rose.

                Monthly Facebook – There are no new changes.
                Constant Contact  - The newsletter now has a mailing list of 1817
                GreenSalem – No updates.
                Monthly Blog – No updates.
                Themes for 2015 – Committee members decide to heavily promote the upcoming waste management changes to what can be recycled and how recycling will be collected in the upcoming months.
  • Mandatory Recycling update  - Working to get Waste Management up to speed on Salem recycling practices.   Recycling is still mandatory in Salem.
  • Other – Salem Sound Coastwatch is sponsoring an August 29th Swim and Fin race.
