New Business
  • Approval April 28 minutes – Approved.
  • Debriefs- April 30 Carlton School Earth Fest; May 2 Drop and Swap; May 9 Salem Education Day; Arts Fest involvement.  These events went well, but in the future Carleton and the Salem Education day are probably not the best venue for SalemRecycles efforts.  Neither event allowed for composting sign-ups, or increased educational efforts, despite event titles.   At the Salem Arts Festival there will be a booth set up to make recycled crafts with children and also try and sign up more participants for the Composting pilot.
  • June 11 Volunteer Appreciation night is upcoming, committee members must RSVP.
  • Other  - Guest Michael Wall of Waste Management discussed changes to Salem’s trash and recycling.  The contract between Waste Management and the city will be for 10 years, and Salem will move to a semi-automated system in. the fall  In regards to this move, all residents will receive a 64 gallon trash toter which will be picked up weekly, and a 96 gallon recycling toter which will be picked up bi-weekly.   The toters will be delivered in late September or October.  The city of Salem has moved to a single-stream recycling system immediately effective, June 1.   After the city of Salem moves to an automated pick-up system any large or bulky items (eg: furniture, mattresses etc) must be scheduled in order to be removed.

Old Business
  • Community outreach  - If possible, see if Creative Salem will help with the final push to sign up residents for curbside composting by promoting the program on its community page.
  • Cigarette Butt Recycling Update and Promotion – Penny Neal has designed graphics which should make the receptacles more visible, and therefore increase use.  Discussion of various other city’s strategies for visibility, including suggestions to attach cigarette recycling to Big Bellies or city trash cans for more convenience.
