NEW BUSINESS

  • Approval February 3 Minutes.  Meeting minutes approved as written by committee members.
  • Community Outreach.  The committee decides to focus on two particular areas.  Olde Salem Greens, checking to be sure that there are recycling containers available for beverage bottles.  Checking the Derby Wharf recycling containers and big bellies to be sure that they are properly labeled.
Other: None.

Old Business
  • Cigarette Butt Recycling Update and Promotion
  • The Subcommittee: Julie Rose, Susan Yochelson, Carol Hautau, Nancy Gilberg, and Myrna Soper will review the findings of the meeting last month and devise specific goals going forward.  Two community members from the Salem Sound Coastwatch group will attend.
  • Dropbox.  Continue to upload even and promotion pictures as you can.
Correspondence
  • Themes: Focus on E-waste promotion.  A unanimous decision to not talk about spring until we see some proof it will return.  E-waste is not to be thrown in the trash in MA (even cords).  Talk about what metals are contained in E-Waste, what R2 and E-Steward certification means.
  • Facebook.  1114 followers.  No response from contacted city councilors about promoting SalemRecycles facebook page.
  • E-Newsletter.  Updated newsletter format sent this month.  Comments and feedback are strongly desired from committee members.   Monthly stories are also desired from committee members.  This month focus is on E-waste, and highlight a fun event like Trashfinders Ball.
  • GreenSalem. Welcome back Flora T.  Updates have been made to the website to reflect discussion in the last meeting.
  • Monthly Blog. One post was published in February, a review of the book ‘Junkyard Recycling.’  For March a series on the 6 R’s of Recycling is planned.
  • Dual-Stream Recycling Guide. Continue to promote on multiple channels.
  • Curbside Composting Update.  Currently there are 1000 participants.  There are still 250 toters to be given away before June.
  • Mandatory Recycling Update. The final report on mandatory recycling will be filed on April 1st.
  • March 28 Book Swap update.  Committee members should promote the event.
  • Website Meeting: A subcommittee was formed, Flora Tonthat, Julie Rose, Nancy Gilberg, Lynn Murray, Beth Melillo, to review website layout and navigation and determine appropriate changes.  They will meet Thursday, March 6.
  • MassRecycle award.  Committee members must promote voting for the popular contest so that Salem can win!  Links can be found on facebook and on the MassRecycle website.  Email, word of mouth, and facebook will all help.
