Salem Recycles Minutes
September 2, 2014. 6:30pm.

Meeting Opened at 6:30 by Chair, Tony Keck.

New Business
  • August Minutes are approved.
  • Haunted Happenings parade will be Thursday, October 2nd. The theme is “Fantasy Land.”  SalemRecycles would like to participate in the parade with a theme of Composting.  Beth, Tony, Flora, Nancy, Myrna, Liz, and Erin are available to participate. Currently looking for an available truck to help with this. The goal of participation is to raise awareness and participation in the composting program.
  • Due to the growing size of the SalemRecycles committee there will be an Emeritus status for those who would like to continue to provide input and volunteer time, but not attend the monthly meeting.  Jennifer Percy and Marcia Lambert will be the first members to move to Emeritus status.
  • SAFE (Salem Alliance for the Environment) will be hosting a fall program to raise awareness regarding the ballot questions: Bottle Bill and Gas Tax.  The event will be sponsored by the Sierra Club as well.  It will take place on October 7th.  SalemRecycles would like to promote this event as we affirm the same position on the Bottle Bill Update ballot question as SAFE.
  • The “Butt Recycling” program in partnership with Terracycle is moving forward in the city of Salem.  The city will purchase containers in order to collect and send butts to be recycled.  This program will be unrolled later in the fall.
Old Business
  • Reminder: If you have any photos to add to Drop Box please do so, and label accurately.
  • Nancy Gilberg was able to contact Beverly Recycles regarding a Beverly Swap and Drop event.  This event will be planned for next year, not at this time, and SalemRecycles will help with promotion and planning.
The Farmer’s market outreach continues to go well. 24 Bins were handed out of August 14.  Will try for another date in September if we can reach a minimum of 6 volunteers to staff the event.
Book Swap: The subcommittee met in order to discuss and finalize the roles and how to provide oversight for the event and the 50 volunteers and 100s of participants expected.   At this meeting there was discussion regarding importance of committee members providing training and oversight for those volunteers.  Compost bins will be handed out at the Book Swap.
  • November 22nd Textile Drive: Now is the time to start building awareness and having people collect textiles.  In order to do this need to use our available communication channels like Facebook and e-Newsletter.  SalemRecycles has secured a police details
Correspondence
  • Facebook at 980 likes.  Please continue to share events with friends.
  • E-Newsletter has just over 500 subscribers.  The committee would like to increase the subscriptions to 2500 rapidly.  Discussion occurred about how we can increase readership.  Each member is strongly encouraged to share the e-newsletter with friends, as well as in other Salem groups such as Neighborhood Associations, other Committees, and with local Councilmen.  Liz Vago and Susan Yochelson are still working in conjunction with Eva to put out the newsletter.
  • Themes for September: Composting/ Dual Stream. October: Costumes/ Upcycling.
  • Green Salem and Blog: No significant updates.
  • Curbside composting: Currently at 787 bins.  It is the SalemRecycles goal to reach 1500 bins by December 31st. Again, discussion occurred around how to increase this number.  Farmers Market  outreach and parade are significant venues for raising awareness.  Other suggestions for increasing participation are welcome.
Mandatory Recycling update: No significant updates. If recycling is not picked up residents may use the new site: See Click Fix to submit problems and complaints.
Other Business.
  • Susan Yochelson raises the question of how can SalemRecycles reach beyond our usual channels of communication and events to reach more of Salem.  A possible suggestion is to require landlords to get tenants to read and sign a statement saying that they understand the Mandatory Recycling law in Salem, and know Dual Stream protocol.  Another possible program is the Salem Sound Coastwatch program in partnership with LEAP to engage students in monitoring trash in the Salem area. Other possible suggestions are requested from committee and non-committee members.
Meeting concluded at 7:45pm.
Minutes submitted by Beth Melillo.
Next meeting September 30, 2014 6:30pm.
