April 2009
Salem Recycling Committee
Meeting of April 7, 2009

Attendees:      Randy Clark, Robby George, Katie Giddings, Marcia Lambert,  Lynn Murray, Jennifer Percy, Julie Rose, Jason Silva, Liz Vago,  Susan Yochelson,

Salem Train Station

Randy Clark reported success, at last, at the Salem Train Station.  A Big Belly Paper recycling receptacle was installed at the station and there will be a pick-up three times a week. There has been the removal of a number of the newspaper machines removed, a start at a clean-up  and the Beautification Committee has been doing some plantings.  There is some interest in creating murals down at the station.

SATV

Susan Yochelson, Katie Giddings, Jennifer Percy and her husband have completed the required SATV training and are now permitted  to do filming of episodes.  Curtis Dragon plans to do one on saving energy around the house and it may involve participation by some of our committee members.  Thanks go to these members for putting in a number of evening hours to fulfill the training requirement.

Learning More about Recycling and Green Efforts

Robby George put out invitations to go to the recycling facility in Andover as well as the incinerator facility in Saugus.   A trip to Blue Hill Farm was also suggested as a way to further educate us about composting.

Election of Officers

Liz Vago was named president of Salem Recycles, Lynn Murray was named vice-president, and the duties of the secretary will be handled on a rotating basis.  Thanks go to Katie Giddings and Randy Clark for their outstanding job as president and vice-president respectively.

Earth Day Event

On Saturday May 2nd, the Beautification Committee and Salem Recycles will jointly host “Clean Salem, Green Salem” at the Salem Common.  There will be the city-wide “Clean Sweeps” activity as well as a bin-decorating contest, recycling brain-teasers, and e-waste recycling.  All participants will receive a “Salem Recycles” button.  There will be pizza served to those involved in “Clean Sweeps” and Rita’s Italian Ice will be offered to all participants.  Notices of the event will be posted to the web site, sent out via press releases and featured in the two city newspapers. It is expected that the Mayor will be on hand for the festivities.

EPA Award

“Salem Recycles” will be the recipient of a regional EPA award for their efforts to educate the Salem citizenry about recycling, to increase the rate of recycling and to increase the scope of recycling.  The ceremony will be held at Faneuil Hall on Wednesday, April 22nd.  A number of the committee members will be on hand for the ceremony.

The next meeting will be held on Tuesday, May 5th at 7:00 pm at the City Hall Annex.
