January 2009
Salem Recycling Committee
Meeting of January 6, 2009

Attendees:  Randy Clark, Katie Giddings, Michaela, Lynn Murray, Penny Neal, Jennifer Percy, Julie Rose, Liz Vago, and Susan Yochelson

New Contract
Discussion centered on the new contract and its implementation.  Despite the change in the marketplace for the value of paper and other recyclables, Salem has a three-year contract that will be honored.

SATV
The group then discussed the opportunity to have a program on SATV.  Kurt Dragon has a program once or twice a month that relates to organic landscaping and has offered us an opportunity to participate on the show.  We could do a whole show on recycling and sustainability.  A number of members expressed interest in receiving training at SATV on how to do a video.  They offer training modules to Salem citizens at a reasonable cost and then access to their studio, which is located on Derby Street.  A suggestion was made to have a show on where the recycling trucks and their contents (paper, recyclables) end up after they make the rounds emptying the blue bins.  Those interested in the group training included Susan, Katie, Jennifer, Penny and Lynn.

Web Site
Liz and Katie met with Christian to discuss the development of a new web site devoted to recycling.  He cautioned them to start small and build from there.  The site may be limited due to funds available for the program.  They need to work with Christian to get some estimates as to what it will cost.

Book Swap
A suggestion was made to come up with a way to make it easy for Salem residents to recycle their books, DVDs, cds, and videos.  The idea of a book swap was developed and a date was set for Saturday, February 28th.  After some discussion as to where it should be held, it was decided that St. Peter’s church was an ideal location as it has a parking lot right next to the building and there is a huge GotBooks bin out in back of the church.

Green Fair
The Green Fair will be held this coming June 16th.  Details to follow.

The next meeting will be held on Tuesday, February 3rd at 7:00 pm.
