Salem Recycling Committee
Meeting of November 4, 2008

Attendees:      Randy Clark, Bobby Heffernan, Marcia Lambert, Lynn Murray, Penny Neal, Councilor Pelletier, Jennifer Percy, Julie Rose, Liz Vago, Susan Yochelson

The meeting began with a discussion of the flyer that was developed for Shredding Day.  A number of suggestions were made to better focus the message, e.g. secure document destruction etc   The Shredding Day event will be held on 11/22/08 from 8:00 am – 12 noon.  Julie will make copies of the flyer available to those who would like to distribute them.

One of the houses this year on the Historic Salem Christmas tour is that of Abby Burns.  An offer was to decorate her tree with ornaments made of recycled materials.  A follow up email will go out to those interested in making these ornaments.  Katie will contact Abby Burns regarding this effort.

There will be a lighting of the Christmas tree at Town Square.  Newmans donated the tree.  The Beautification Committee is sponsoring the event with Shirley Walker in the lead.

There was a further discussion about the need to improve the web site.  Liz has been leading this effort.  Julie recently went to a conference and came back with a number of good web sites that would provide us with ideas.  Julie now has a young woman by the name of Michaela working as an intern in her office.  She will be available as a resource for some of our efforts.

The Dear Neighbor letter has been finalized and will be available in PDF form for everyone to use.  Thanks go to Susan Yochelson for an outstanding idea.  This Dear Neighbor letter, the shredding day event flyer, and the recycling postcards should all be made available to the library for distribution.

On November 20th at 8:00 am, the Chamber at which NS Carting will be the featured guest will host a Salem Main Street Event.  The purpose of the event is to discuss recycling concerns of the business community.  Julie will be on hand, however, other committee members are invited to attend.

Councilor Pelletier announced that the new waste removal and recycling contract will save the City $800k per year and noted that it would have never happened without the outstanding efforts of both Julie Rose and Jason Silva.  He also thanked the Recycling Committee for all of their efforts.

The next meeting will be held on Tuesday, December 2, 2008 at 7:00 pm.
