Salem Recycling Committee
Minutes of the meeting of
October 7, 2008

Attendees:   Marcia Lambert, Penny Neal, Jennifer Percy, Julie Rose, Jason Silva, Lynn Murray

The meeting began with a discussion of the Halloween kick-off parade.  The Phoenix School featured a float that focused on kids and recycling.    A number of photos were taken to capture the event.  Members of this committee participated in the parade and reported how the “recycling” float was very well received.

In March, there will be a city wide Science Fair that will involve all the schools.  We will coordinate with the schools to find out how recycling can be featured as part of the fair.  (Alice Davis of the Superintendent’s Office – contact)  Liz and Julie met about developing curriculum for the schools that would feature the benefits of recycling.

The Recycling Sheet has gone out with both the water and the tax bills.  Given the time of the bills, it will take nearly three months to reach everyone.

Randy Clark has had a number of conflicts and has been unable to attend the last couple of meetings.  However, he is still working with the MBTA to provide for recycling containers at the Salem train station.

Several of the Committee members have met with success when featuring recycling information at Crosby’s and other location.  There have been a lot of questions and the information has been very well received.  More volunteers and locations are needed to adequately spread the word in Salem.  We need volunteers who could appear at these locations non-weekend and non-evening hours in order to reach a broader audience.

The Salem Gazette has provided the committee with a great opportunity to get information out by their willingness to accept regular columns on the various aspects of recycling. This column could also appear as a series of Q&As on recycling.  Katie Giddings authored the first such article which was very successful.

The Salem News has been approached, however, it was determined that they would most likely only report on aspects of the new contract.  The Globe North is another possibility to pursue to disseminate our message.

It was determined that our committee would be more effective if we divided the workload amongst several committees and use the monthly meetings as more of a time to report on the work of these committees.  The committees are as follows:

Events – Marcia Lambert, Penny Neal
Communications – Katie Giddings, Jennifer Percy, Penny Neal and Lynn Murray
School Liaison – Liz Vago and Marcia Lambert

Jennifer reported on the “Dear Neighbor” letter that will be used to send a personal note along with recycling information to further reinforce our recycling education campaign.  This letter needs to be cleared by City Hall before it can be disseminated.

The next meeting will be held on Election Day, Tuesday, November 4th @ 7:oo pm.
