YOUTH
POTTERY: GHOST GRAVEYARDS
Age: 7-12 years
Date: Thursdays, Oct. 6 & 20
Time: 4:15 to 5:15 p.m.
Fee: $45
Place: ClayWorks Pottery Studio, 53 Mason St.
Create a spooky graveyard out of clay! Week one create the project and week two glaze (paint) the project. All pieces will be fired and a pick-up time will be arranged. Instructor: Kathy Wells, pottery teacher.           

JEWELRY MAKING AND DESIGN
Ages: 8-12 years
Date: Wednesdays, Oct. 10, 17 & 24
Time: 3:30 to 5 p.m.
Fee: $45, includes materials
Place: Senior center, 5 Broad St.
Learn how to design your own jewelry! Start off with basic bead stringing and different wire techniques like wrapped wire loop earrings and multi-strand necklaces, then learn how to use crimping pliers, wire cutters, and chain nose pliers. Along the way, students will be introduced to different materials such as leather and suede cords. Each week you’ll make something different that you’ll get to keep. VIDEO BOOT CAMP
Age: 8-14 years
Dates: Wednesdays, Oct. 5 to Oct. 26
Time: 3:30 to 5 p.m.
Fee: Free to Salem children.
Place: Salem Access TV studio, 285 Derby St.
Learn the basic operation of Salem Access TV’s digital camcorders and video editing. Participants will use footage they shoot themselves to create a short program in which they call the shots. Class limited to 10. Instructor: Patrick Kennedy.
 
ACTING FOR YOUNGSTARS!
Age: Grades 1-5
Days: Thursdays, Oct. 13 to Nov. 17
Time: 2:30 to 4 p.m.

Place: Witchcraft Heights Elementary School
Acting for YoungSTARS! explores the techniques required to perform a character onstage in front of an audience, increase speaking skills and build overall confidence and creativity. This is done through a series of theater games and culminates in a last day showcase in front of an audience of family and friends. Class size limited to 13 students. BABY SIGNS: Sign, Say & Play
Age: 6 months-3 years, with parent participation

A Baby Signs play class with games, songs and activities that highlight developmental skills and introduce families to baby sign language. Participants receive a starter kit with resources for signing at home. LEARN TO PLAY GUITAR

If you’ve ever wanted to learn how to play the guitar, this is the class for you! You'll start learning how to read music and play guitar chords so you can begin playing your favorite songs. ADULT
HEALING WITH YOGA AND THE 12-STEPS
Date: Mondays, Sept. 19, 26, Oct. 3, 17 & 24

This is a new class based on the book, “Yoga and the 12-Steps”. This program will explore the therapeutic role of yoga as it connects to the recovery process. Participants will assess an issue they would like to explore for self-development and growth. The power of yoga will then be applied to strengthen ones established goals. Class will engage posture work, stretching, movement and expressive therapy techniques. Start today, be everything you can be. Nothing changes if nothing is changed. BEGINNING WATERCOLOR EXPERIENCE

This class is for people who have never tried watercolor or have only had a brief experience with it. Award-winning, professional watercolorist and art educator, Paula Beaulieu, will show you how much fun watercolor can be in this hands-on, supportive workshop. WHAT’S NEW IN MEDICARE FOR 2012?
Date: Friday, October 7
Time: 10 a.m.

A representative from the SHINE program at Mystic Valley Elder Services will update us on changes in Medicare; enrollment dates, health insurance plans and prescription plans. Learn about the preventive benefits that Medicare now covers as well as cost savings programs available to those who qualify. You’ll also be able to schedule an appointment with a SHINE counselor for an individual counseling session at a later date. The annual Medicare Open Enrollment is earlier this year starting October 15 and ending on December 7. During Open Enrollment, you may enroll in a new plan or change your Medicare coverage for next year. This is the perfect opportunity to review your current coverage. State-certified SHINE (Medicare) Counselors will help you understand your plan, as well as other options you may have. Pre-Registration is required; call Meghan, 978-744-0924
 
DANCING THROUGH THE DECADES WITH DANCE CALIENTE

See Eileen Herman-Haase and Raul Nieves, owners of Dance Caliente, do a waltz, the Peabody, the Charleston, swing, an Argentine tango and salsa in their “Dancing through the Decades” performance.  Dancing through the Decades is an interactive performance celebrating timeless dances from the 1800s to today. WILD TURKEY RUNNING CLINIC
Age: 13+
Date: Thursdays, Oct. 13 to Nov. 17
Time: 6:30 to 7:30 p.m.
Fee: $65; $55 Wicked Running Club
Place: Salem Common
This program is ideal for all levels and will focus on training for the 5-mile Wild Turkey Race. Entry into the race is included. Participants in this clinic will receive a customized training program and access to Toomey Sports Running Center’s online training program and running log at no extra charge. Participants will receive daily emails outlining the scheduled workouts for the day. More info at www.toomeysports.net. POTTERY
Age: 18+

This introductory class will teach a variety of hand-building techniques, including pinch pots, coils and slabs. Participants will create projects while having a chance to use the potter’s wheel. Instructor: Kathy Wells, pottery teacher.
 
PRENATAL YOGA
Date: Mondays, Session I, Oct. 17 to Nov. 28 (no class Oct. 31 & Nov. 21)
Time: 6:15 to 7:30 p.m.
Fee: $35 per 6-week session

With a focus on breathing techniques and classical yoga poses, this class is a safe and effective way to build strength and stamina during pregnancy, help alleviate discomfort, and relieve tension. Instructor: Christine Pappas, Registered Yoga Teacher (R.Y.T) with Yoga Alliance. She completed a 475-hour Hatha Yoga teacher training with Barbara Benagh at the Yoga Studio in Boston and is also certified to teach Prenatal Yoga.
 
OSTEOPOROSIS PREVENTION EXERCISE
Date: Mondays, starting October 17
Time: 10:30 a.m.
Fee: $3 per class

Learn to perform exercises to benefit the muscles of your arms and legs under the guidance of a Physical Therapist with emphasis on correct technique, postural education and modifications for specific physical conditions. Exercises are done standing and sitting using an elastic band which is held in your hands or tied around your legs and/or feet.  Balance and stretching exercises are also included. A minimum of 10 participants are needed in order to run the class. Pre-registration is required. Instructor: Jennifer Guerin, Physical Therapist, North Shore Physical Therapy.
 
AFTERNOON MOVIE:  HOCUS POCUS

MAKE IT & TAKE IT FLORAL DESIGN WORKSHOPS

This season have beautiful fresh flowers in your home to express your creativity and flair.  Or the holidays are coming and what better than a gift of fresh flowers? Learn the secrets of professional floral designers while turning that bunch of store bought flowers into a unique arrangement that cause your friends to say "you made that?!” Nov. 15th create a Thanksgiving centerpiece and Dec. 13th create a floral arrangement for the holidays. No experience necessary. Pre-registration required. Registration deadline is the Friday before each class. Instructor: Laurie Marino, floral designer.
 
FINANCIAL DECISIONS FOR RETIREMENT

FRUITS ON CANVAS

This one-day workshop will teach you how to paint a pear, apple and grapes. After you have time to practice, you’ll paint the fruits on a canvas board that you’ll get to bring home.  All levels of painters are welcome to join. All materials are included. Instructor: Jeanette Lerner.              

BEREAVEMENT SUPPORT GROUP

The holiday season can be extremely stressful for those who have lost loved ones. You may find yourself dreading the holidays and feeling unsure and overwhelmed with how to cope with the upcoming holiday season. If you have experienced the death of a loved one, please join us as we share our losses, develop coping strategies, and move toward healing in a supportive, confidential environment.  Registration is required. HOLIDAY CARDS PRINTMAKING WORKSHOP

Get into the spirit of the holidays, meet new people, reconnect with friends, and have fun while creating holiday cards for those special people on your list. We'll be using water-based printing inks to create many prints of your original design. The surface "printing plate" is inked again and again to produce multicolored prints that make beautiful cards, collages, or artwork to hang on your wall. You'll go home with many prints. HEALTH PLAN OPTIONS FOR PEOPLE WITH MEDICARE

Offered by Blue Cross Blue Shield of MA, this presentation includes an explanation of Medicare, Medicare prescription drug benefits, how Medigap plans and Medicare Advantage plans work with Medicare as well as provide updates for Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Massachusetts 2012 plan offerings. This popular seminar is often praised for the way it makes complex information easy to understand. A question and answer session will follow. All are welcome, regardless of your insurance coverage.
