The City of Salem Park, Recreation & Community Services Department Presents:
 
YOUTH
DAY PLAYGROUND PROGRAM
Age:  6 to 12 years
Date:  Weekdays, starting July 5, for eight weeks
Time:  8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Early drop-off and late pick-up times are 7:30 a.m. and 4:30 p.m., with $5 additional charge per day for each.
Fee:  $95 per week; $85 for the second child in the immediate family; $65 for each additional child.  A $25 deposit for each week is required.  Full payment must be received before the start of each session.
Place:  Forest River Park
Counselors blend sports, crafts, music, and discovery projects into a week of fun.  Swimming lessons are also offered.  Participants should bring lunch and a drink.  Snacks will be provided.  The Counselor-in-Training (CIT) program is for 13- to 16 year-olds; $80 per week.  The limit for CITs is four per week.  Campers of CITs may sign up for any or all weeks.
 
JUNIOR LEAGUE GOLF
Age:  10-17 years
Date:  Tuesdays, starting July 5, for six weeks
Time:  10 a.m.
Fee:  $5
Place:  Olde Salem Greens
All levels welcome.  Bring clubs for a scramble format at Olde Salem Greens golf course.  Wear a collared shirt and sneakers.  No jeans allowed.  Participants will receive T-shirts. Instructor:  Tom Doyle, SHS golf coach.
 
HIP-HOP DANCE LESSONS
Age:  6-12 years
Date:  Tuesdays, July 5 to Aug. 16 (no class July 19)
Time: 5-6 p.m.
Fee:  $25
Place:  Senior Center, 5 Broad St.
Class introduces boys and girls to jazz and hip-hop dance styles in an exciting, relaxed environment.  Designed for children of all levels who love to dance and want to express themselves. Instructor:  Meghan Murtagh.
 
WICKED KIDZ RUN
Age:  6-14 years
Date:  Saturday, July 9
Time:  9 a.m.
Fee:  $2
Place:  Forest River Park

BOYS SOCCER CLINIC
Age: 7-12 years
Date: July 11 to July 15
Time: 9 a.m. to noon
Fee: $35
Place: Memorial Park
Learn the basics of the game while working on technique. Players should bring cleats, shin guards, and a water bottle. Each player will receive a T-shirt. Instructor: Michael Collins, Salem High School boys soccer coach.
 
GIRLS SOCCER CLINIC
Age:  7-12 years
Date:  July 11 to July 15
Time:  1 to 4 p.m.

CHEERLEADING CLINIC 
Age: 6-10 years 
Date: Mondays, starting July 11, for six weeks
Time: 6:15 to 7:15 p.m. 
Fee: $25
Place: Salem Common
Participants will learn the fundamentals of tumbling properly and team up to present exciting cheers. Instructor: Tanya Grocki. 
 
POTTERY WORKSHOPS
Age: 7-12 years
Date: Mondays from 4:15 to 5:15 p.m.
July 11 & 25: Clay Mask; Sept. 12 & 26: Coil Popcorn Bowl
Fee: $45
Place: Clay Works Pottery Studio, 53 Mason Street
July: Using the slab technique, crate a one-of-a-kind mask out of clay. Funny, scary, fancy, it’s all up to you!
September:  Using cookie cutter shapes and coils make your own one-of-a-kind popcorn bowl that can be used for popcorn or many other things too! The first week participants will make the project and the second week the participants will glaze the project. After the second week, all pieces will be fired and a pick-up time will be arranged. Instructor: Kathy Wells.
 
DRAMA LESSONS
Age:  8-12 years
Date:  Wednesdays, starting July 13, for seven weeks
Time:  6 to 7:30 p.m.
Fee:  $35
Place:  Old Town Hall, Derby Square
Learn theater fundamentals through games, vocal and physical exercises, improvisation, scene study and performance to promote self-awareness, discipline, interpersonal communication, collaboration, artistry and fun. Instructor:  Melanie Garber.   
 
BASEBALL CLINIC
Age: 6-12 years
Date: July 18 to 22 
Time: 9 a.m. to noon  
Fee: $40  
Place: Forest River Park, O’Grady Field 
Through a variety of activities, each participant will gain a better understanding of America’s pastime. Participants will be instructed in everything from hitting to fielding. Bring your own glove. A T-shirt will be given to each player. Instructor: John Silk, former Salem High coach.
 
SOFTBALL CLINIC
Age: 6-12 years
Date: July 18 to 22
Time: 9 a.m. to noon
Fee: $35
Place: Mack Park
Players will learn the fundamentals of the game, while participating in various fun activities that help improve skills. Players should bring a water bottle, sneakers and glove. If you have your own bat, bring that, too. Each player will receive a T-shirt.  Instructor: Megan Staples.
 
KAYAK DAY PROGRAM
Age:  9-15 years
Date:  Mon.-Thurs., July 18-21
Time:  10 a.m. to 3 p.m.
Fee:  $225
Place:  Pick-up and drop-off at Salem Willows
Topics include:  basic paddle techniques; wet exits; buddy rescues; self rescues; basic kayak safety; preparation for touring and evaluating marine and weather conditions.  Hands-on demonstrations and practice are coupled with short kayak tours.  Space is limited so sign up in advance.  Fee includes kayak, paddle and life jacket.  Children should bring lunch. GIRLS BASKETBALL CLINIC 
Age: 7-14 years 
Date: July 25 to 29
Time: 9 a.m. to noon

Place: Forest River Park court 
Learn basic skills, such as dribbling, passing, guarding and shooting. Bring sneakers and a water bottle. Each player will receive a T-shirt. Instructor: Jamie Campbell, former coach for both Salem High and Marblehead High. 
 
LACROSSE CLINIC 
Age: 7-18 years 
Date: July 25 to July 29 
Time: 4 to 6 p.m. 
Fee: $35 
Place: Salem Willows
Field Participants will be divided into three age categories (youth, middle school, and high school) as they learn the fundamentals of lacrosse. Youth and first year middle school players should bring a mouth guard and lacrosse stick. Middle school and high school players should bring full equipment. Players will receive a T-shirt. WITCH CITY SWIM MEET
Age:  6-16 years
Date:  Wednesday, July 27
Time:  6 p.m.
Fee:  $3
Place:  Forest River Pool
T-shirts given to the first 25 entrants; ribbons given to overall winners, male and female, in each heat.  A cookout with hot dogs will follow.
 
ADULT
BEACH VOLLEYBALL
Date: Thursdays, June 2 to Sept. 22
Time: 6 to 8 p.m. 
Fee: Free Place: Dead Horse Beach at Salem Willows. 
Bring friends or swing by on your own for a pick-up game of beach volleyball. Laid-back with an emphasis on fun. Games are self-refereed. Email edunn@salem.com if you’d like to be added to the beach volleyball email list.
 
FREE GOLF INSTRUCTION
Date:  Mid-May through September
Time:  Wednesdays, 5 to 7 p.m. and Saturdays, 3:30 to 5:30 p.m.
Fee:  Free to Salem residents
Place:  Olde Salem Greens, 75 Wilson Street.
Lessons will include putting at the practice green and instruction on swing technique. Meet at the practice green. Instructor: Wayne Janien.
 
AUTHENTIC ITALIAN COOKING
Date: Every other Wednesday (4 Lessons per session), Session IV: July 6 to August 17; Session V: September 14 to October 26
Time: 8 to 9 p.m.
Fee: $130, authentic ingredients included

Licia will show you how to prepare authentic Italian food that is healthy and delicious, yet fast and simple to prepare for the whole family. Have fun while enjoying real Italian dishes and learning Italian cooking, culture, history and buying tips. Please BYO drink (or bottle) to each lesson. T’AI CHI AT THE SALEM COMMON
Dates:  Saturday, July 9, 30 & August 30
Time:  8:00-9:15 a.m.

Place:  Salem Common    
A t’ai chi class, under the instruction of Ben Hernando will meet at the Salem Common.  Bring your own chair if unable to stand for more than 30 minutes. This variation of t’ai chi is designed for senior citizens, but all ages are invited to attend. MEDITATION
Date:  Mondays, July 11 and 25
Time:  12:15 p.m.
Place:  Senior Center, 5 Broad St.
Fee:  $5.00 per class
Elaine Tavis will offer meditation classes at the Senior Center on the first and third Mondays of each month.   The fee is $5 per class.  Daily meditation practice brings peace of mind, inner joy and inner peace. By increasingly gaining control over your mind, every session brings you closer and closer to your own self while filling your center with joy, wisdom and bliss. When you meditate regularly, your mind becomes clearer and more focused, thereby improving your quality of life and allowing you to perform better and more quickly on all tasks you choose to be involved with. Studies have shown that the regular practice of meditation can assist one in lowering blood pressure and help to decrease stress and improve memory.  Pre-registration is required, call 978 744-0924.
 
CRIBBAGE

This traditional card game is a new addition to the activities offered at the Senior Center. Come play this “oldie but goodie,” while meeting others and having fun on the second and fourth Tuesdays of each month. To sign up, call Meghan at 978-744-0924. 
 
SPIRIT OF BOSTON  LUNCHEON & CRUISE
Date:  Wednesday, July 13
Time:  10:30 a.m. departure
A trip into Boston for an afternoon cruise and luncheon aboard the “Spirit of Boston” will be offered by the Salem Park, Recreation and Community Services Department on Wednesday, July 13.  The bus will depart the South Harbor Parking Garage, 10 Congress St., Salem, at 10:30 a.m.  The cost of the trip is $69; make checks payable to “Brush Hill Tours.” For more information or to sign up, see Meghan or call her at 978-744-0924, ext. 22.
 
SCRABBLE

PARENT AND CHILD RECESS

Extra Effort Fitness invites parents to work out while their children are supervised in organized recess-type activities.  The adult program incorporates strength, endurance, flexibility and functional training.

AFTERNOON MOVIE:  “THE KINGS SPEECH”

We will transform the Senior Center dining room into a theater Tuesday, July 19, at approx. 12:15 p.m., for a showing of “The Kings Speech,” starring Colin Firth and Helena Bonham Carter.  Traditional movie snacks will be served. 12-WEEK MARATHON AND HALF-MARATHON CLINIC
Date:  Thursdays and Saturdays, July 21 to Oct. 6
Time:  Thursdays at 6:30 p.m.; Saturdays at 7 a.m.
Fee:  $125
Clinic is ideal for all levels, with workouts on Thursdays and long runs are on Saturdays.
 
EVENING YOGA FOR STRENGTH & FLEXIBILITY
Age:  16 and older
Dates:  Session IIIA, Tuesdays, July 26 to Aug. 30; Session IIIB, Thursdays, July 28 to Sept. 1.
Time:  6-7 p.m.
Fee:  $45 or $9 drop-in fee
Place:  Senior Center, 5 Broad St.
Participants will be introduced to Rasamaya yoga, which features smooth, flowing transitions.  Exercises complement serious running or other aerobic exercise programs and help avoid injuries.  Each class includes Sun Salutations, postures to strengthen the entire body, and core work.  The small group setting allows for individual attention.  Bring your own mat and dress in comfortable clothes.  Beginners and experienced practitioners are welcome.

ALL-AGES
INTRO TO KAYAKING
Age: 12 and older

Learn the basics of kayak safety, practice wet exits and learn the basics of how to maneuver your boat efficiently, including moving forward, backward, how to stay straight, and how to turn with ease.  Fee includes kayak, paddle and life jacket.

INTERMEDIATE KAYAKING
Age: 15 and older
Date: Saturday, July 16
Time: 9-11 a.m.

Place:  Salem Willows, Willows Beach
Build on foundations from Basic Kayaking by practicing on the ocean (near shore) and working on strokes.  Combine strokes, go deeper into edging and leaning boats, and learn strokes “on the move”.  Time permitting, start learning bracing and bow and stern rudders.  Fee includes kayak, paddle and life jacket.

BASIC KAYAKING
Age:  12 and older

Build upon your foundations.  Refine the forward stroke and other basics, including moving sideways using draw strokes and turning using sweep strokes.  We’ll also introduce edging and leaning for more efficient turning.  Fee includes kayak, paddle and life jacket.

KAYAK RESCUES
Age: 15 and older

Participants will learn: wet exits (what to do when you fall out of your boat); how to get back in your boat by yourself; how to get your partner back in the boat quickly and efficiently), and; what basic rescue equipment to bring on any voyage.  Fee includes kayak, paddle and life jacket.

SENIORS
FOREST RIVER POOL 55+ SWIM
Date:  Friday mornings
Time:  10-10:45 a.m.
Place:  Forest River Pool
The Forest River Pool will be open for lap swim, for Salem residents 55 years of age or older, Fridays from 10 to 10:45 a.m. A Forest River Pool pass is required for entrance into the pool and are available for purchase in the main lobby of the Senior Center. Passes are $6 for adults and $5 for senior citizens (age 60 and older). A parking sticker (Forest River, Winter Island Park, McCabe Marina) is also required. NAVIGATING THE COMPLEX HEALTHCARE SYSTEM: How Care Management Can Help

A lecture entitled, “Navigating the Complex Healthcare System:  How Care Management Can Help,” will be presented Wednesday, July 13, 10 a.m., at the Senior Center. The topic will be presented by Brianna Martin, MSW, LCSW, Care Manager and Brooke Parker, MSW, Care Manager, both of NortheastLink Care Management.  This lecture is part of a series presented by Northeast Senior Health.
