Bertram Field Fieldhouse Feasibility Study (RFP P-46), consultant interviews

Documents:
Proposals in response to RFP-46 from Gray Architects, Inc., Arrowstreet, and Beacon Architectural Associates

Gray Architects, Inc.

Dennis Gray provides an overview of his experience on comparable projects, including the athletic fields and field house at Bishop Fenwick High School, Gymnasium renovation at St. John’s Prep, and the athletic complex at Salem State University’s Central Campus. He is familiar with the site through his previous assessment of the existing fieldhouse and work on the replacement of the structurally unsound light post.

For Bertram Field, he will be the lead of a team to include other supporting professionals as needed, such as a structural engineer and landscape architect. His approach will be to establish existing conditions through a site analysis, determine programming needs, and then create conceptual design alternatives.

Arrowstreet

Architect Larry Spang of Arrowstreet and Landscape Architect Deborah Myers of Activitas present. Mr. Spang describes experience with comparable projects, including the Kipp Academy in Lynn, a South Boston Community Center, an historic stable in Cambridge, the DCR boathouse at Revere Beach, and the West Bridgewater Community Center.

Mr. Spang states that he would be the lead for this project. Ms. Myers provides an overview of her experience with comparable projects and notes that site circulation must be a key focus for this project.

Lutrzykowski asks what the approach will be to plan for such a constrained site. Mr. Spang replies that all available sites are difficult, since the easy sites were taken long ago. A decision must be made on whether the existing building is worth keeping and people accessing the stands need space to circulate. Devine asks whether the study can be done without a site survey. Spang explains that without the survey, he would depend as best he can on the as-built plans from the track and field renovation.

Beacon Architectural Associates

Architect J. Michael Sullivan of Beacon Architectural Associates and Chris Huntress, landscape architect of Huntress Associates, present. Mr. Sullivan describes Xaverian Brothers High School in Westwood as a comparable project he work on. Project elements included a gymnasium, parking, and circulation routes.

Stanton asks about the approach to public participation. Mr. Sullivan states that he is mostly concerned with users and thinks a survey would be a good way to collect information to determine programming needs.

Lutrzykowski asks who will lead the project. Mr. Sullivan says he will be visible throughout the project, but he will assign a project manager. He is happy to arrange for the Committee to meet with the project manager.

Devine will compile the Committee’s rankings and submit them to the Mayor and Purchasing Agent.

The meeting is adjourned at 3:42 p.m..

Respectfully submitted,
Tom Devine
