Members Present:  Christine Michelini, Dan Shuman, Jerry Judge, David Pelletier, and William Peck.  Also present was Staff Planner Frank Taormina.

Public in Attendance:  none

In the absence of an elected Chairman and Vice Chairman, Frank Taormina called the meeting to order at 7:05 p.m.

1.      Approval of Minutes
D. Shuman made a motion to approve the October 22, 2008 Meeting Minutes seconded by J. Judge. The motion passed unanimously.

2.      Public Comment
No public comments were taken, as no one from the public was present.

3.      Old/New Business
Election of Officers
The board considered whether or not they will nominate and vote for a new Chairman and Vice Chairman at tonight’s meeting because four board members were not present.  Ultimately the board decided to table the election to the December 10, 2008 Meeting.

4.      Sharrows – Discussion with City Engineer
F. Taormina updated the board that Dave Knowlton, City Engineer, could not make it to the meeting tonight because of a conflict in his schedule, but assured him that he will be present at the next Bike Path Committee Meeting on December 10, 2008.

D. Pelletier mentioned that he was heading home from Logan Airport one night and passed through East Boston on his way home and noticed sharrows and share the road signs on State Route 145 (Bennington Street).  He showed the board photos of each and mentioned that until that day he was unaware that the concept of sharrows were being implemented anywhere in the state, especially on a state roadway.

D. Pelletier and D. Shuman mentioned that the City should talk to Nicole Freedman, City of Boston Bike Coordinator about the use of sharrows in E. Boston and forward the material to the City Engineer.

F. Taormina stated that he would do both and added that the information that Dave shared with the board should be very helpful for the City Engineer and will hopefully persuade him to support the use of sharrows in Salem.

W. Peck asked if the board would consider meeting with the Police Department, Salem Schools, and perhaps Salem State College to discuss promoting bike safety and collaborating on putting together and distributing bike safety literature.  The board discussed the topic briefly and agreed to discuss it at the next meeting.

Adjournment
There being no further business to come before the Committee this evening, D. Pelletier made a motion to adjourn, seconded by C. Michelini and approved unanimously.  The meeting was officially adjourned at 7:22 p.m.

Respectfully submitted by:

Frank Taormina,
Planner/Harbor Coordinator
