Minutes

Present: Marcia Lambert, Mary Ellen Halliwell, Maryanne Piechocki. Sandra Power, Ellen Talkowsky, Judith Wolfe.   Absent: Sam Fiore, Bev Moustakis.   Visitor: Lisa Lyons

Meeting was called to order at 7:32 P.M.

The submitted Amended Minutes of the Meeting of 4/17/2012 were approved with the correction of two typographical errors.  Item No. 2 was corrected to note that the Salem Cultural Council grant was for $750.00 and the web designer’s name is Sara Maurno.
1. ~Clean sweeps overview.  Ellen reported that cleaning took place at 15 locations and involved 150 volunteers. Some groups did more than one location.   The Committee provided gloves, bags for refuse plus the use of some tools.  Concerns about the availability of necessary tools at some sites were raised.   It was suggested that a call for contribution of tools plus notice to future volunteer groups to bring their own tools would be useful in addressing the problem.  Lisa volunteered to draft a “Thank you” letter to be sent to Ace Hardware, Home Depot, the Engine House and the many other individuals who were so helpful.  The Salem Recycles Committee’s clothing and house wares swap drew over 75 contributors and was very successful.

2. ~Lady of Salem.  Plans and activities related to the introduction of the “Ladies” to the general public during the Salem Arts festival the first of June were reported.  A Cabot Management video prepared for prospective sponsors of the “Ladies” is available on the Web.    Artists are to be contacted and the “Ladies” are to be delivered to Roy ‘Whittier for attachment to boards and bracket placement. As promised “Gold sponsors” are to get logos and public credit for their contributions. The figures will be displayed until mid October.  Votes for three favorite figureheads  will be cast during the summer. The venue for the “People's Choice” awards is to be announced.

3. ~Plant Sale.   Discussion encompassed multiple aspects of the event.  The sale will be held on Front Street in the same space behind old Town Hall as was last year’s event.  In addition a new site will be established across from the Post Office on Riley plaza.  The Town Hall location will feature donated plants, plants provided by Flowers By Darlene, plus items to be raffled.  The Riley Plaza location will feature donated perennials.  Maryanne will manage the raffle and Sandi will manage the Riley Plaza site.  Issues regarding setting up the necessary tables, managing the sales transactions, establish pricing practices, making signs and acknowledging known volunteers plus the procedures for the raffle were addressed.

4. ~Traffic Islands.  Discussion was tabled.

5.  Other:  Joy Winkler and Christina Conti of the CDC approached the Committee regarding areas of the “Point” that need beautification.  Sandi will meet with them.

The meeting was adjourned by consensus at 9:10 P.M.

Respectfully submitted,
Judith Wolfe
