Board of Selectmen
December 1, 2011
Community Hall
7:00 p.m.
Present: Joseph R. Becker, Chairman; Sheila H. Dibb and Leroy C. Clark. Peter J. Letsky arrived at 7:40 p.m.
Also present: (see attached)
Chairman Becker opened the meeting and welcomed everyone. Introductions were made around the table.
Representatives from the five towns in the Wachusett region met to discuss the 21st Century Skills Initiative proposed by Superintendent Thomas Pandiscio. Dr. Pandiscio gave an overview of the initiative to make every school in the region wireless as well as purchasing 1500 iPads. He explained that the million dollars that wasn’t used on the oil remediation would be used toward this.
Several questioned the timeliness and asked why it couldn’t wait until annual town meetings. Dr. Pandiscio explained that he would like to implement this as soon as possible to get the work at the schools done, get the teachers trained etc. in order to be ready for September, 2012. Sterling has already voted not to support at this time.
Discussion on future costs of upgrades, add ons, replacements, etc. Most towns are struggling financially and agree that technology is important, but feel that now is not the right time.
Almost all agreed that more research and information is needed before holding special town meetings in January, 2012 specifically for this. Most feel that this is a budget issue and should be brought forward during budget talks.
Chairman Becker thanked Dr. Pandiscio for his attendance.
Mr. Clark moved to adjourn. Ms. Dibb seconded. Vote unanimous. Meeting adjourned at 8:40 p.m.
Respectfully submitted,
Nancy M. Macaruso, Secretary
