Open Space Committee meeting minutes                                                            December 8, 2015
Meeting began at 7:00 p.m.
Members: Kelton Burbank, Karen Rossow, Deb Cary, Rick Gardner, Kim Houde
Guests: Sue Cranford (TAP)
  • Minutes from November 10 were approved
  • Who should minutes be sent to? OSC members and TAP members.
  • TAP Team: is Wally Whitney, Rick Gardner, Sue Cranford, Kathy Sweeney,  John Stimson
  • Segment Update:
  • Four Corners to Dickens section:
  • Nothing from Stephanie on Krashes property. There are some trails on the property but they don’t follow the path we need. If we get approval to go through, may not allow horses and bikes.
  • Deb still planning to talk to Steve Stimpson about possible use of Stimpson land.
  • Wachusett Mountain Section:
  • Need to figure out how to get this approved. How can we make it easy to approve for Dwayne and Denise. Denise is there Tuesday-Saturday. Kelton will drop in to talk to her. Give them the landowner package and proposal.
  • Dwayne has indicated that he has a concern about signage…does not like the Midstate signs for example.
  • Discussion with DCR:
  • We need a point of contact with DCR to start talking about how we will work with DCR.
  • Deb talked to Denise at WMSR. She indicated that she would talk to Dwayne about it.  Permitting idea from Quabbin, whereby people register (no fee), agree to uphold code of trail etiquette and then get a pass for using the trail. Deb will track down and propose a trail user registration program.
  • Kelton will stop in to see Denise and figure out next steps.
  • Deb will arrange a meeting with DCR, Jim French as soon as he gets back from three week vacation, we think in mid-December. Plan for after first of the year, before Trail summit.
  • For DCR, Audubon, Nimrod, and Norco our agreement probably needs to be in writing. Different than normal landowner ‘notification’. Midstate does not have a formal document with Audubon.  Deb will craft something for this type of agreement.
  • Kelton will ask Peter Gobi  about setting up meeting with Ann Gobi to discuss approaches to DCR.
Also we will want to follow up with Dick O’Brien.

  • Mission Statement
  • We will stay with ‘Trail Around Princeton’  (no s after Trail).
  • We agreed that we need to keep this general, only a couple sentences, and drop the detail. Key points to include are:
  • Ties back to our town open space plan
  • Multi-Use trail around the town
  • Hitting key places / points of interest, with spokes to other trails.
  • Collaborate with other organizations such as DCR, Audubon, PLT, etc.
  • Kelton will draft this and send it for review.
  • Trail Summit
  • Kim is working on a Press Release for TAP Trail Summit
  • Goals: (1) to promote the TAP and inform people of work done to-date, and (2) to solicit ideas about trails. Some points to hit in the press release: Exciting, new to Princeton, not a costly venture. Get to Landmark the week before. Get to town news.
  • Rick will reserve the Annex for this meeting.
Plan for 1-4 PM. Presentation at 1:30, perhaps breakout sessions by segment or area of town.
Identification for TAP members. Name tags or something.
Need some food/beverages. Trail mix??
Rick will check with Kevin Heman – Print large scale versions of assessor maps.  Put them on the cardboard/corrugated which will stand up. Keep them in the annex room for our use.
  • Agenda: 15 minute intro by Kelton, 30 minute walk through explored trails by Rick, Open Q+A, collaborate on trail ideas.
  • Fieldstone Farm
  • Project has been approved by all town committees.
  • Plan for different segments is changing a bit and may change as limited development and farmhouse lots attract investments.
  • We all need to get to town meeting next Tuesday.
  • Next Meeting OSC Jan 12th, 7PM
