Princeton Open Space Meeting
October 26, 2010

Members present: Kelton Burbank, Deb Cary, Jim Samdahl, Kim Houde and Doug Williams
Members excused: Phil Grzyb

  • Old Colony Road Bridge permit:  Phil spoke with Doug Andrysick about the approval process for the bridge.  Per Phil, Doug offered to file the notice of intent with the Conservation Committee and the Mass DEP.  There could be a fee associated with the DEP estimated to be about $1450.00.  He will also do some field work associated with creating the needed stamped plan. We decided we will await Doug’s results.  It is still not clear whether or not the DEP application is needed per our discussion with the Conservation Committee.  After some discussion it was decided to press forward with Doug’s work and to present it to the Con Com first.  If they feel we need to file with the DEP we will then pursue this. Some funds are available at this time for the permit.
  • Old Colony Road Bridge: There was some discussion about whether or not the bridge needs to be compliant with the ADA standards.  It was noted that none of the other bridges on the Mid-state trail or the Mt Wachusett Reservation were ADA compliant.  Deb offered to look further into this.
  • DCR Grant: The DCR has grants available for trails and bridges.  After reading the application, it seems these grants are for multi-use (including motorized travel). This would not be applicable to our project.  Deb offered to call to see if in fact including motorized travel was a requirement for the grant.
  • Trails: There was much discussion about the goal of creating a trail network throughout the town.  The bridge is the keystone to this project.  Discussion also took place regarding the potential uses of both the former care-taker’s house on the mountain (know as the Gates House)  as well as the Superintendent’s House on Mountain Road. One or both of these sites could serve as a hiking, biking, and skiing center much like the Catamount Outdoor Center in Williston Vermont was discussed.

The meeting adjourned at 8:15 pm.  The next scheduled meeting is for November 23 at 7:30 pm in the Annex.
