Minutes of the Princeton Historical Commission
October 14th, 2014
Town Hall Annex, 7 PM

Attendees: Sheila Dubman, Matt Lindberg, Mickey Splaine, Joyce Anderson and Andy Brown, Cemetery Superintendent

Reading of the August minutes was waived.

Andy Brown, the new Cemetery Superintendent, visited and we discussed:
  • The new vaults for the gravestone fragments (purchased with PHC budget monies) were delivered to Meetinghouse Cemetery.  Andy, Sheila, Glenn and Alex will set up a meeting to determine where they will be buried.
  • Questions were raised about the two Bagg stones. Alex will be asked to contact the PHS to seek more information as to their opinion.
  • Andy suggested filling the vaults if their structural integrity has been compromised. The Commission asked that he wait until the vaults are examined to determine if this is necessary.
  • Missing Brooks iron rail in Meetinghouse Cemetery. Remove or repair? PHC needs to assess this and we will work together to find a solution.
  • Broken stones at the other cemeteries (Andy suggested using an epoxy on them.)
Sheila wrote to Brian Allen about the disposition of the fiberglass cell towers in town. He responded that it is too early to determine their disposition. The PHC would like them removed if they are no longer needed.

Bones in the vault at Meetinghouse Cemetery
Sheila communicated with Rhys Townsend who suggested we need to contact a paleontologist.
Joyce spoke with MHC. Their reply was ‘that was to be expected’.

Worcester Road National Register Historic District
Joyce sent letters to the owners of the two houses that are to be included in the district. One expressed interest and one has not responded. Joyce will follow up.

Guidelines for the town common
We consulted Terra Firma, the publication put out by DCR, to use this as a guide. Sheila narrowed the article down to two bullet points quoted from the publication.
The group PHC looked at the 19th century boundary map as well as, the current assessor’s map that did not include Dingman Park (the one on hand that evening) which should be considered as well. More discussion will follow regarding language and rules etc. for example: no new structures and a possible town meeting requirement.  The Historical Commission could provide an advisory opinion.

Other items tabled.

Next meeting: Thursday, November 20th, 2014

Respectfully Submitted, Mickey Splaine and Joyce Anderson
