Poland Conservation Commission
Minutes of October 12, 2011
Rich Haslip called the meeting to order at 7:15 PM at the home of Jack Quinn. Meeting was held there because Sue Ellis forgot to get the key to the library where the meeting was scheduled to be held. Thanks to Gail and Jack for the use of their home. Members present: Rich Haslip, Jack Quinn, John Laskey and Sue Ellis.
Approval of the minutes of September were postponed. Rich said he didn’t want to see the meeting dates changed for any one (unless weather was an issue) because it was too confusing.
Rich reminded the members that there was a meeting scheduled with the Selectmen on Wed. the 26 at 6:30 to discuss the conservation easement. The members discussed the easement and felt that the town needed a town forester to complete the responsibilities documented in the easement (such as a forest management plan).
Rich said he had spoken with Scott Segal (rec. dept) Scott will be getting some students to clean and mark trails, and possibly create a XC ski trail around the big tree (which would be easier to manage than the existing trail).
The next project the commission might undertake was discussed. There was talk of creating an open space plan and working with the Comprehensive planning committee. Sue has talked with Stan Tetenman (chair of that committee) Stan agreed that these committees should work together. Sue suggested the commission have an article in the next Poland progressive and she will find out the due date for articles.
Rich suggested the commission might create “scenic road tours” to go along with the Route 26 places of interest. Rich said that Cyndi Robbins would fund the project. Sue said Gerry Chabot had taken photographs of the scenic vistas in Poland but no one has been able to get them. (Gerry has passed away) Rich said he thought there was a meeting in Augusta on Nov 1, regarding open space plans. He would confirm the date and time and location. Meeting was adjourned at 8PM.
Respectfully submitted
Sue Ellis Member/Secretary
