Special Meeting

The Town Woods Operating Committee held a Special Meeting at 2:00 PM on Thursday, 25 April 2013 in the 2nd Floor Conference Room of the Old Lyme Memorial Town Hall. Present were Don Bugbee, OL Park and Rec Director; Glynn McAraw, Park and Rec Commission; Jason Thornton, Lyme Park and Rec Director; Anna Silberberg, Old Lyme; Wendy Visgilio, Old Lyme; and Bonnie Reemsnyder, Old Lyme First Selectwoman.
After introductions were made, Bonnie Reemsnyder gave a brief overview of the maintenance of the Town Woods Fields beginning in 2011 through last summer. In 2012, the maintenance fields were treated with organic treatments, and it was not until late in the season that the results were seen. Dr. Jerry Silbert, of the Watershed Partnership has consulted the Town of Old Lyme on organic care for playing fields. Ron Tyler has the maintenance contract on the Town Woods Field, through December, 2015, and has agreed to perform the aeration, overseeding and fertilizing, at an additional cost. Ron has been very supportive and helpful on all of the efforts.
It was suggested that additional, supplemental aeration/overseeding be done this year on the high traffic areas of the fields, in addition to the two main efforts of aeration/overseeding. Oversight is needed by this committee. Dr. Silbert also suggested that we do some additional treatments, including microbiology treatments, which can only be done if the budget allows for it.
The FY 2013 budget was distributed to all members, as well as a copy of the contract with Ron Tyler, landscaper. The Committee reviewed the budget and expenditures for this year in order to determine if additional treatments could be funded.
The committee agreed that biologicals should be applied to Field #1 as a test field, to see if it helped. Other recommendations by Dr. Silbert were reviewed, including the recommendation to have one contact person for him to meet with regularly, and who can regularly check on the condition of the fields.
There was further discussion on the scheduling of lacrosse practices/games, and soccer practices/games in the Fall. Don Bugbee handles oversight of field schedules.
A motion was made by Glynn McAraw for Don Bugbee to serve as Chairman. Seconded by Jason Thornton. So voted.
A motion was made by Glynn McAraw for Wendy Visgilio to serve as Secretary. Seconded by Jason Thornton. So voted.
Anna Silberberg agreed to be a liaison with Dr. Jerry Silbert on plans for the maintenance of the Town Woods Fields.
Don Bugbee suggested that the next meeting be scheduled on June 5, 2013 at 8:30 AM. This will be a regular meeting, since it is over 30 days from this meeting.
Motion made by Glynn McAraw to adjourn at 3:03 PM. Seconded by Jason Thornton. So voted.
