Tree Commission Minutes 04/15/2010


Old Lyme Tree Commission Minutes:
April 15, 2010

Members Present:  Gerry Foster, Pat Moll, Anne Bing, Emily Griswold, Joanne DiCamillo

Members Absent: Joan Flynn and Tom Degnan

A quorum being present, Chairman Joanne DiCamillo called the meeting to order at 4:00 PM. Pat Moll (alternate) is authorized to vote during the meeting to make a quorum

January Minutes- The minutes of the January meeting were reviewed. A motion was made by Gerry Foster to approve the January minutes; motion was seconded by Anne Bing.  Motion was passed.

March Minutes- The minutes of the March meeting were reviewed.  A motion was made by Emily Griswold to approve the March minutes; motion was seconded by Pat Moll. Motion was passed.  Gerry Foster and Anne Bing abstained from voting because they were not present at the March meeting.

Budget Balance- No Budget Balance was reported to the Chairman for the month of March.

Old Business-  The Landscape Plan of the entrance of LOLHS.  The Duck River Garden Club and John Rhodes had met with the Historic District Commission.  There will not be any pavers added to the Memorial Garden area.  They will just use grass.

Tom Degnan has approved the plan.

Tree Inventory- Joanne DiCamillo asked Tom Degnan for an update on his progress with the Tree Inventory. He said he would contact an arborist, Dana Whitney, who may be willing to do a tree inventory using Microsoft Excel.  He had no updates and told Mrs. DiCamillo he will get moving on it.  The Tree Commission is waiting to hear from Tom Degnan.

The Tree Commission has $6,500 from last year’s budget allocated for a tree inventory that is at risk and will lose by JUNE 30th of this year.  

Joanne DiCamillo emailed Ruth Roach about GIS Training and has not had a response.  Ruth Roach had asked for $12,000 to update the town website and for training from the Board of Finance.

Other Business- Mr. Brainerd OF 6 Lyme Street had requested that a second Hornbeam tree be planted in front of his property. Tom Degnan will look at the site and report back to the Tree Commission.

Joanne DiCamillo reported that Steve Sparaco from Rivers End landscaping had planted 2 trees, the maples on Buttonball Road and Mile Creek Road, last fall for around $900.

Running Brook Nursery had quoted just under $800 for 1 tree, a High-top Carpinus, which is a hard to find tree, planting the tree and a one year guarantee.
The Tree Commission is also going to purchase a Nyssa sylvatica to plant in front of 68 Sill Lane.

Pat Moll mentioned there may be a spot for a tree planting in between the old Christ the King parsonage and E.F. Watermelon.  

Sandy Tolderlund has requested a tree planting in front of her property on Sill Lane.  The overhead wires may be an issue, the members will go look at site and decide on a shade tree or a flowering tree for planting this coming fall.

Member’s Trees- The members will weed and mulch their trees again this spring.  Joanne DiCamillo will order mulch from Old Lyme Landscape and bring to the OL Town Hall for each member to pick up their bags.

                                2 Ornamental Pears south of 64 Lyme Street
                                1 Weeping Cherry at the Children’s Learning Center

Gerry Foster’s Trees:           1 Franklinia at Center School
                                1 Japanese Lilac Tree at Memorial Town Hall
                                1 Sugar Maple south of OL Ice Cream Shoppe
                                3 bags of mulch

Anne Bing’s Trees:              2 Weeping Cherries at Lyme Regis
                                3 Honey Locusts at McCurdy Road and Route 156
                                4 bags of mulch

Emily Griswold’s Trees: 2 Red Maples at 110 Mile Creek Road
                                1 Red Maple at Old Shore Road and Buttonball Road
                                2 Ornamental Cherries in front of Cross Land Firehouse
                                1 Ornamental Cherry in front of Police Station, Rt. 156
                                5 bags of mulch

Care of Trees- Aaron Dickinson had made a mistake on the last estimate; the new correct estimate is $581 for the inoculation of 6 Elm trees.  Joanne DiCamillo authorized it; they will inoculate 6 Elms for Dutch Elm Disease.

Town Hall Landscaping- Emily Griswold and Joanne DiCamillo had talked to Tim Griswolod about the weeding/mulching of the new planting at the OL Town Hall.  Pat Moll will write up a bid, send to members, members will make comments and Pat will finalize the bid.   She will then send final bid to Emily Griswold who will give it to the First Selectman.

Reminder- June Meskwaka Tree Conference

Motion was made by Gerry Foster to adjourn meeting, seconded by Anne Bing, meeting adjourned at 5:10 PM.
