Conservation Commission Minutes 04/02/2019
MINUTES OF THE CONSERVATION COMMISSION MEETING HELD ON APRIL 2,2019 AT TOWN HALL 7:30 P.M.

The Meeting was called to order at 7;40 p.m.
Members present were Tom Sherer, chairman; Maureen Plumleigh, George James, secretary
Minutes of the previous meeting were approved as written.
New business               George reported that the Open Space Commission was not going to trap the beavers on the Ames parcel and that
seven to eight hundred trees will die as a result of the flooding of a second valley that had not been affected by the beavers before. The perimeter trail is flooded in  several places as is the yellow trail and the access to the caves. Trail maps here need revision and the only entrance to Ames is a muddy mess. Mr. James’s only reason for not publicizing this situation is that he does not want to jeopardize pending acquisitions by the Open Space Commission.
George reported that he is collecting background information on the town’s efforts to bring solar power to Old Lyme as part of the sustainability project.

Maureen presented an extensive report on her activities in the recycling area at the Congregational Church and library. A coffee hour was held with the theme of the three R’s: reduce, reuse, recycle.  Maureen has written an article on recycling for the town’s quarterly report and the church Events publication and she noted that two girl scouts had earned their silver award for recycling efforts (plastic bags)at the library. It was also noted that the State is considering the banning of plastic bags.
Tom reported on the Congregational Church’s effort to focus attention on climate change. This effort involves the survey of both the attitudes toward global warming and activities by church members to have a positive impact on the environment. It is a very ambitious project and probably should be
written up for the sustainability project.
George reported that he has contacted the local Audubon Society. They are eager to get together and discuss joint efforts to improve habitat and to involve young people in activities associated with birding.
Meeting adjourned at 8:40 p.m. Respectfully submitted, George James secretary
