New business

Two of our members are on the town’s sustainability committee.
Maureen noted that declaring a watershed was part of that program. Tom noted that solar at the schools and the new street lights are also part of this program.
George presented a pamphlet which spelled out what “1-7 plastic “ means, noting that the current program accepts plastic 1-7. After a discussion it was recommended that we contact the Willimantic recycling plant to hear exactly what they regard as acceptable recycling items. It was further noted that Calamari in Essex will recycle a host of other items. Ever source’s  home energy analysis was also mentioned as an important part of a household’s carbon footprint.
Maureen made an extensive report on the Congregational Church’s efforts to promote the “reduce, reuse, recycle” effort. She also reported on the library’s efforts to heighten awareness on global climate change and reducing its own carbon footprint. Her proposed list of priorities for the commission will be discussed at our next meeting.
George reported that the Open Space Commission has made a long list of improvements, not only on their web site but also in the field. Trails are being walked on a regular basis and are generally in very good condition.
The Conservation Commission wishes the Open Space Commission good luck with their efforts to add new property to the town’s open space.
George reported that Lyme’s first selectman will only entertain suggestions about Rogers Lake from the Old Lyme Selectmen. The Economic Development Commission has not replied to the Conservation Commission’s letter with regard to acquiring the Montonaro’s 27 acres for senior housing and an athletic field.
Meeting adjourned at 8:40 p.m. George James, secretary
