Minutes of the Old Lyme Conservation Commission Meeting on October 3, 2017 at 7:30 p.m. town hall
The meeting was called to order at 7:35. Members present were George James, Maureen Plumleigh, and Tom Sherer, chairman.
The minutes of the previous meeting were accepted as written.
New business- It was suggested that because of infrequent attendance by some regular members that a notice be placed on the town web site for the two alternate positions. We seek wider input from the community at our meetings.
The outstanding exhibit on pollinators created by Anu Gotfreid Fogg is to be preserved for future events. Maureen has collected milk weed seed for future plantings of this plant vital to the monarch butterfly.
The article in the town quarterly newspaper on private well water testing resulted in at least one test being completed. The commission urges everyone to have their home tested for radon gas, a colorless, odorless gas that can be fatal.There are relatively simple and inexpensive ways to correct the situation.
A discussion followed about the conservation commission’s role in assisting with the creation of the 2020 Town Plan of Conservation and Development. It was suggested that a meeting of all major boards and commissions be held to provide an active discussion of the future of the town. The meeting would be held in the spring of 2018 and each board and commission would provide input to this important document. As in the past a town-wide questionnaire would provide input to the plan by members of the community.
The commission wants to work with the chairman of the Rogers Lake Authority to publicize the authority’s long range plan for the lake.
Items also noted were the report of the presence of hydrila, a new invasive plant, the concern over road chemicals entering the lake, the clogged condition of the Huntington Bay stream, storm water entering the swimming areas, and the unconfirmed report of zebra mussels in the lake. The Commission would like to sponsor a mailing to all Old Lyme lake shore residents with the goal of developing an e-mail information system for lake residents.
