Conservation Commission Minutes 07/07/2016
Minutes of Old Lyme Conservation Commission- July7, 2016

Call to order: 7:40 p.m.
Members present: Tom Sherer, Maureen Plumleigh, George James, Rachael Gaudio (new member)
Guest: Rebecca Waldo
Minutes of the previous meeting approved as written

Rachael Gaudio was welcomed as a new member. Rebecca Waldo  was informed about how to become a commission member.

The Congregational Church held three seminars on environmental topics.
It was also noted that the Chamber of Commerce sponsored an event centered around the restoration of ospreys in our area.
Three budget items were voted on: The lake bed blanket, rebar for the blanket, two week display of the Conservation Commission banner in April 2017, and  money for printing using town equipment.
It was agreed to invite the Vivint. solar company representative to the next meeting in order to explore this company’s program.
A Rogers Lake resident noted that certain invasive weeds make excellent compost. The Commission favors this approach rather than the use of pesticides. Several complaints about the recent application of pesticides in Rogers Lake were forwarded to the Rogers Lake Authority’s contractor as well as to the Old Lyme First Selectwoman.
Maureen has written an article for the next quarterly newsletter.
The Conservation Commission banner will be displayed the first two weeks in April 2017.
The Commission noted that shallow well testing was to take place after the application of pesticides in the lake. It was noted that the two byproducts of the pesticide have apparently never been tested for toxicity by the EPA.

Old business- Four residents of Rogers Lake have requested the use of existing lake bed blankets. The current status of the rare turtles discovered in Rogers Lake was questioned as was the frequency of required septic pump-outs in Old Lyme. (five years)
