The commission approved the minutes of March 3, 2011.
Old Business
- Reminder for Members To Be Sworn In
Members were reminded to be sworn if they had not done so.
Members were asked to categorize the priority action items for the next meeting.
- Status/Needs for Film Showing with the FCCOL
The commission will co-host the showing of the documentary “Fuel” at the FCCOL on Thursday, April 28 at 7:30 pm. A telephone call with Tom is needed for updated information.
George mentioned that the state has a map for town bike routes. The Old Lyme route passes the Old Lyme Marina. The bicycle group does not feel this is safe to promote and George is researching how to change the map. The group would like to see someone from Parks & Recreation join their group.
- Follow-up on Future Guests
Monica has tried to reach Jenny Dickson and is waiting on a reply. George will reach out to Ray Zelek and ask him to share his solar knowledge. Maureen suggested Dick Blair should be invited to talk about the “green” church lawn.
New Business
- Rogers Lake Watershed Buffers & OL Crew Team
Maureen and Sue reported that Osceola Trail will have no new plantings, but rather a barrier of railroad ties and a donation is being sought. Rowing is interested in partnering on the lake efforts. There will be a plan for plantings in May. Monica mentioned that the link to the West Shores should be on the Conservation Commission’s town page.
- Results of the OPC Meeting of March 29th
Lauralyn reported that the meeting with Chip Osborne was successful. Solutions for crab grass, the pricing of equipment, a flag system to protect the investment in the fields and the concern of endocrine disruptors were discussed. Rob Linde asked Chip if he would be available to consult if needed and Chip was open to the possibility. Phil Neaton is presently working on a rough draft of an organic program that OPC members will look over at the next meeting.
- Poster Project for Display at the Library
Monica worked with staff and students at LOLHS to create different poster mock-ups. She showed several possibilities to the CC members. It was felt that this was a good start, but more work needed to be done. The poster will be created to display at the library and other venues throughout the year. A slogan and content were discussed.
- Organic Land Care Policy/Statement
The need for a statement was discussed. Sue will make some notes to share in May.
- Update on the Clean Water Act and Aquifer Protection Act
George mentioned that he and Dave are looking into the Aquifer Protection Act.
- Past Meetings and Upcoming Events
Submission for the next Old Lyme Events was discussed. Members discussed an interest in finding someone who could write for the commission.
Earth Day 2012 was discussed. The unfortunate timing of Earth Day 2011 falling on Good Friday as well as April vacation hindered plans this year. Planning will need to begin soon for 2012.
Monica would like to involve residents in neighborhood clean-ups; Sue would like to work on brochures; Lauralyn would like to get children in the schools as well as scouts involved in upcoming environmental efforts.
The meeting adjourned at 9:50pm.
Lauralyn Lewis, Secretary
