  • Approve Minutes of November 3, 2010
The group approved the minutes of November 3, 2010.

New Business

1. The new member invitation letter was discussed. The list of action items for 2010 will be an attachment.

2. The end of year report has been submitted to the Selectmen as required by statute. It was suggested that it be more widely distributed. The chairman will take that responsibility.

3. A draft bicycle plan was presented for discussion. There appears to be both local and regional interest in improving bicycle activity and improved safety. It was suggested that the schools athletic department be contacted.

4. The chairman noted that LOLEF. Org is a local educational foundation whose members encourage public education activities outside the schools. It was suggested that this organization might be interested in promoting awareness about pesticides and could fund some of our efforts in that area.

5. It was noted that now that the Open Space Commission is no longer working as a subcommittee of the Conservation Commission, the Conservation Commission is specifically assigned certain tasks that the subcommittee members were performing, notably the Land Use Map for the Town.

6. The question of whether the Conservation Commission should purchase  radon detection equipment and rent it out of the town hall was discussed at some length. The chairman will look further into the relationship with the town Assistant Health Officer and the commission dealing with the use of the equipment.

9. The visit to Branford to examine their organic treated playing fields has been arranged for December 10th.
The Selectmen and various other interested parties have been invited to attend.

10. Meeting dates for the new year have been established. Election of new officers will take place at the January meeting.

11.  The letter regarding the request for a letter of support from the Board of Education re pesticides on Town recreation fields has been sent. The chairman stated that he would seek a test of the ground water in the Townwoods playing fields area.
12. There was a discussion about what to do next with the “Chemical Reaction” disk. It was suggested that the schools be contacted to determine whether or not it could become part of the curriculum.

13. The Commission after a brief discussion decided to support Steve Ross’s suggestion that the town establish an ordinance that would prohibit the export of water resources to other locations.

14.  The public hearing on the proposed open space commission was to be held shortly. The Chairman has expressed his reservations and concerns to the open space committee, the first selectman, and the lawyer involved.

15. The draft Plan of Conservation and Development has approached its final version. It includes almost all the recommendations made by the Conservation Commission.

16. The Chairman will write a letter to the Inland Wetlands Commission expressing concern over the potential for runoff of lawn chemicals from the 128 acre parcel known as Old Lyme Woods into Rogers Lake which already has a serious weed problem.

The meeting adjourned at 9:30 p.m.
George James, Chairman
