Dear Community Member:

Old Saybrook Healthy Communities Healthy Youth has designated the 2014-2015 school year as the “Year of Building Community”.  We invite you to an Asset Building Challenge on Wednesday October 22, 2014, from 7:00 – 8:30 pm, at OSMS Auditorium.

The importance of creating positive role models, safe environments, and solid opportunities for our children to assist them in developing into happy, healthy, well-rounded adults is paramount to the future success of our community.  We know, because it has been demonstrated in our community over the past twenty years, that Developmental Assets are the “Building Blocks for our Community”.

Please join Chris Pallatto, Executive Director of the Valley Shore YMCA, as he describes the Developmental Assets Model and how we can, in very practical ways, apply it in all of our interactions with youth and in our daily lives.  The Connecticut. Youth Service Association has recognized Old Saybrook Youth and Family Services and other Middlesex County bureaus for their “Assets in Action” programming.  This has already at work in our community for over twenty years—come and learn how you can be involved!

Old Saybrook students in grades 6-12 will once again be taking the SEARCH Institute ‘Profiles in Student Life’ survey in November, 2014. We will share the results with you in March about how important the results are in determining program development that are very responsive to our specific community needs. The purpose of this October Challenge, also,  is to ask community members to think about important questions such as:

  • “What are we doing today to have positive effect on the youth community?”
  • “What can we do together to enhance our collective efforts?”
  • “How can we work collectively to sustain our efforts?”
We will introduce to you the proven theories of Youth Asset Building, provide some time for interactive discussion, and introduce our new motto:  “Love our Town…Love our Kids…Do the Right Thing!

While we recognize that everyone has a busy schedule, we respectfully request that you attend this event on Wednesday October 22, 2014 at the OSMS Auditorium.  Childcare (with pre-registration) will be available—call 860-395-3190 to register for childcare.

Sincerely,
Carl Fortuna
