Old Saybrook Youth & Family Services Commission Meeting

Call to Order
Chairman Barnes called the meeting to order at 5:47 pm.  He welcomed attendees and thanked all for being champions for Youth & Family Services.  He told the commission that this would be his last meeting and he was going to retire.

Chairman Barnes led the pledge of allegiance.

Review and Approval of Minutes
A motion to approve the June minutes was made by Ms. Tiezzi, seconded by Ms. Castro was so voted with 2 abstentions.

Chairman’s Comments  - Chairman Barnes again spoke about stepping down after many years and retiring from the OSPD.  Ms. McNeil thanked Chairman Barnes for all he had done for her and for Youth & Family.  She noted that Chairman Barnes was instrumental in guiding her through many decisions.  Ms. Bushnell noted that Chairman Barnes was originally on HCHY.  

Director’s Report
Ms. McNeil thanked all for coming.  She reported on the following:

  • Chair discussion:  Ms. Welsh will serve as the interim chair;
  • Summer Programming:  All full and summer stock was full;  there were no outside directors;
  • #322 Renovation (Outside)/Timeline;  moved back to week of 9/25; looking really great; Dan doing a wonderful job; driveway will be chip sealed; ramp replaced;
  • Fall Programming – Rescheduling of Family Day;  Family Day is on hold; Ms. McNeil spoke about re-naming it Community Day or OS Day was suggested by Ms. Bushnell;
  • LPC – State Budget Cuts; funding cuts; not just Middlesex County; Ms. Anderson noted that there were about 60 students looking for Community Service Hours;
  • Interns; Ms. McNeil talked briefly about the NARCAN Training that was being offered to the public.  Discussion….pharmacists to attend; drug and alcohol counselors;  Ms. McNeil will speak with Ms. Chadwick;
  • YAC – PYDI Maine; At this time looking for students and reps to be facilitators; fabulous experience; students making a film clip;
  • Community Programming:  Cardone & Daughter will do a car seminar to identify problems without calling parents event; also there will be a finance literacy event; also life skills before off to college; job interviewing.  ‘Movies on the Beach’ will be facilitated by Park & Rec. beginning next summer

New Business – Ms. McNeil noted that 9/22 is the Shoreline Clinical Breakfast at the Pavilion with Dr. Condulis.  Providers working together; relationship; training; community providers, schools, counselors will attend.  Time: 7:30 – 9:15 a.m.  Breakfast provided.

Ms. McNeil noted that the YAC Spaghetti Dinner is October 20th at the Masonic Temple.


IX.

Other Business  - Reminder that YAC meets the first and third Thursdays.  Jr. YAC will meet October 12th for the first time.

Sophie Alden was a mentor at the retreat.  There were 17 seniors; cabin mentors;

Adjournment – A motion to adjourn at 6:38 p.m. by  Ms. Tiezzi seconded by Ms. Alden and was so VOTED unanimously.
